Four adults, traveling by car, just seeing the sights. We don't tend to go to fancy restaurants, or to performances. Will spend some time in San Sebastian (famous beach region), but will likely not spend time sunbathing.
We walk a lot, just strolling, people watching, looking at architecture and "the sights".

Although I have been to Europe a number of times, and lived in Germany for 6 months, I need to refresh my memory. I seem to remember that walking shorts are not worn by many Europeans. Casual slacks (not jeans), would be more appropriate????

However, while strolling town at the beach, during the daytime, do walking shorts make one stand out like a tourist???

I don't think you have to worry about SS. It is a sea-side town.

In Barcelona, jeans are certainly worn by the locals - even to nice restaurants.
I have seen many tourist happily wearing shorts in Barcelona,
as they probably do in Paris, London or Rome..

Walking shorts will do fine when strolling along La Concha beach, but even the most casual restaurants prefer you wear something other than shorts if you are going to be sitting inside.

There are very few places in San Sebastian-Donostia that have a formal dress code, and that includes the Michelin star restaurants, and if you're only stopping off for pintxos, then shorts are not a problem in the typical pintxos bar in the Old City or Gros.

We were in SS-Donostia area last May and it was chillly & rainy. I was not prepared and stores were selling summer clothes so it was difficult to pick up even a warmer sweater. By the time we got to Barcelona which was late May, it was beautiful. Don't know if this is typical weather or not, but u might want to think some warm layers just in case.

EK, San Sebastián is NOT a beach resort, at least the way you may think as a typical one. This is rainy land, not very warm, and you won´t find any seaside resort stuff. Probably the most beautiful city in Europe, but if you´re looking for sunny beaches, go to the Mediterranean.

That is good to know. Actually, we are not beach-goers at all, and good to hear that it is a beautiful city. Laying on the beach isn't my "cup of tea".
