what to reserve in advance in Italy?
I hope this isn't a double post but it didn't show up on the Italy board...
I know this has been asked before, but I really need it now. We are going to Rome, Florence(possibly),Venice in October. What should I book now?
Trains now too?
I will print this list and use it as a checklist this time LOL

Uffizi and Academia Museum Reservations
The easiest and cheapest way is to call Florence 1016868 (dial around number), 011 (U.S. international access code) 39 (Italy's country code) then 055-294-883 8:30-18:30 M-F and 8:30-12:00 Sat. Florence time. You will get an English speaking operator and in 2-3 minutes YOU CAN RESERVE FOR BOTH. This is through the reservation service at the Uffizi and costs beyond the normal entry fee only about 3 euro for the service. This is MUCH cheaper than the commercial booking services.
You will not be charged for the reservations unless you use them.
Secret Itineraries tour of Doge’s palace Phone number is 011 39 041 520 9070. English-speaking operator.
You will not be charged for your tickets if you don't go on the tour.
What trains are you planning to take? Dates and times?

Hello,
October isn't a huge touristy time, so I think you will be okay with train tickets if you wait until yo get there. If you go to florence, you should book tickets to the accademia and the ufizi galleries. As far as Rome, you can book the vatican ahead of time and also the Borghese gallery. Other than that, there really is nothing else that you would need a reservation for. I really don't think you need to book either one in advance, just do it the first day you are there.

Don't feel intimidated, especially if you are new to this board. There are some great people with great ideas and great stuff to be had here. Pluck everyone's brains and then do what you feel comfortable with. It's your trip, and sounds like you are going to have a great honeymoon.

In Rome, if you're interested in seeing the Tomb of St. Peter, aka the Scavi Tour, send an email request to [email protected] and include the full names of all people in your party, the language in which you want the tour and the name and phone number of where you will be staying. Last week, I sent a request for our trip in December and immediately received notice that the request was received and that at a later date will I be notified if we are fortunate to get tickets.

I would add to Annmarie's post about getting your Scaavi tickets early (this underground tour of St. Peter's is popular and intensely interesting for both the faithful and non-believers: I have accompanied both!). However, don't get discouraged if they do not reply before your departure (this has been known to happen). You may find the info is at your hotel on arrival. If all else fails, go to the booth inside the Vatican just by St. P's, with a copy of your original email request a day or two before and you may get lucky and be slotted in to the next English speaking tour. I have witnessed this.

we are going for 2 weeks...still trying to decide if we are going to keep our stay in Florence or add the 2 nights to Montalcino...and stay 4 in Montalcino and either cut Florence or day trip there.

You can book an entry time to St. Mark's in Venice for free, on line. Don't know if you'll need that in October.
Also, you can book tickets to any papal audience that will be going on while you are in Rome. You email St. Susanna church.
I booked my train tickets on line with few problems. I wanted to have the confirmations in hand, dates and times determined in advance,etc. Others like more flexibility. I think you can only book train tickets two months in advance.
DO reserve the Borghese. The collection of sculpture is outsatnding!
