What to pack for July/August
I would like to pack "light" for this trip (notice - this trip). I have perused the forums and have read some excellent ideas re: packing. I would appreciate any fodorite insights into packing at this time of year in the UK. Are the nights cool (sweater weather?)
I am doing a walking tour for a few days and I am not sure what to pack and if I have to pack warmer or rainwear.
Also I have read on some comments that a walking pole of one kind or another is essential if doing some walking due to wet ground...necessary? And could I pick one up in the UK and where?
Thanks so much!

It's allegedly the hottest time of the year, but as with all UK weather it's somewhat unpredictable and can be anything between 10C and 30C, dry or wet, calm or windy, clear or grey depressing cloud...
... often within the same day. It's unlikely to snow though - though all of the above are ground level temperatures, at a few thousand feet the temperatures can be 10C lower.
As for a pole - it depends where you are walking, I've certainly never used a pole for wet ground though I've used them to control my ascents & descent

Where in UK are you going? London can be stifling hot and humid while it is can be cold in Scotland.
But in reality, you should have several options available but pack your bag based on the forecast available a few days before your departure.
Trying to choose between warmer or rainwear would increase your load. For me, packing warmer and the rainwear are one and the same.

It won't be freezing cold at night, but it could well be chilly. But where are you going? The difference in temperature between the North of Scotland and the South Coast of England is marked and as alanRow says, it also depends on altitude.
A sweater is probably necessary, walking poles can be bought from most outdoor shops in most places. Definitely pack something light and waterproof.
