What to do with our car in Bologna?

We're going to be in Bologna for 5 days, our hotel being in the historic area. We need a car before and after our stay there. What can we do with our car? Is there a public parking area where we can leave it?

Your hotel should be able to advise you on this. My hotel asked if we had a car so they could give us info but we didn't have a car so didn't take the info.

Why not drop off the car, ending the rental term, upon arrival in Bologna and then rent again when you leave?

Thanks Hamlet - I did think of ending the rental and renting again when we leave Bologna. I will contact the hotel first to see what they say. I've heard that you have to have a special permit to enter the city - anyone have any information on this?

Yes, the central part of Bologna is a ZTL, zone of traffic limitation and the fines are very high for violations. They catch people with on-street cameras, so you don't know you have been tagged until months later when you get a whopping bill ($200 - $300) on your credit card from your car rental company, which is obliged to pay and then charge you for it. The Italian police have a year to charge you. That's one good argument for turning in your car while you are there. If your hotel can arrange for a permit, good. But otherwise, be very careful!

If you're not going to use the car while in Bologna, why pay for 5 extra rental days and the cost of parking?

If I'm going to be somewhere that long, I drop off the car upon arrival and pick up a new one when I'm leaving.
