What to do in Rome, Montone, Florence and Positano

What to do in Rome, Montone, Florence and Positano
PLEASE HELP! We leave for Italy next month and we still need to work on our "to do" list. Our itinerary is Rome/4days, Montone/3days, Florence/4days, Positano/3days and then one last night in Rome before we fly home.
We plan to rest and relax in Montone & Positano but while we are in Rome & Florence we hope to maximize our time since there is so much to see. We'd like to visit the historical museums & sites however, we don't want such a packed schedule that we will be exhausted by the end of the day. How much is too much for one day?? We are in our early 30's and after a day of appreciating the museums, history and architecture along with a nice nap, we want to enjoy a simple dinner and then hit the town to see what the nightlife is like.
We both love historical sites, architecture and art and are extremely excited about this trip! We are also really looking forward to trying the local cuisine and wine. YUMMY!! So please share your favorite restaurants, things to do and places you enjoyed on your trips to these amazing cities. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I'll be on my third trip to Italy and my fourth to Europe this Sept too!
When traveling with my friends, I find that I'm the highest energy, and most motivated sightseer of the group. Usually out by 9am and go until after dinner - no daytime naps either and I've just hit the big 50! So, with that to go on,
I've planned my Rome portion so that I have one major site per day, then will do other sites that are more flexible as I feel like it.
1 - Vatican museum tour with Context Rome + climb the dome of St. Peter's on my own
2 - Antiqua Rome tour + see Nero's house and cat sanctuary on my own, plus major churches in the area
etc....in the end - only you can decide what is too much. Reading all the trip reports, as Bob suggested will give you a really good idea.
One thing I've noticed on the Fodor's Italy trip reports of this summer, is that many people try to visit TOO MANY hilltowns in Tuscany and Umbria in one day - then end up getting frustrated or too tired and missing what they wanted to see in the first place because they didn't plan for closing times, etc.

If you haven't already purchased the MIchelin green guide books for the areas you intend to visit, do so. This information source is a good start on the sites in each area and should help you focus on what interests you.

Bob & Ira - I actually have spent many hours on the message boards here and on slowtrav which is how we planned out our itinerary and found accomodations. I sort of feel like I just can't absorb any more information - overload! I will continue my research though and still appreciate all of your advice!
Dayle - Wow, it sounds like you have amazing energy! Thanks for your advice, that sounds like a doable plan to have one major site per day along with something more flexible.
