what to do in florence

I am planning a trip to italy next year summer and i really want to check out florence. Is there any reccommendations on where to eat in florence to get really good food but not that expensive? A big food fan here.

You might have titled this "Where to eat in Florence" since that is what you are asking.

What Ack said, plus you need to define "not that expensive."

Anyway, Zio Gigi, near the Duomo, is a small, moderately priced place that locals go to.

Also the cafes in the central market and the Mercato San Ambroglio [near Santa Croce] have very good reasonably priced food. Typical Florentine dishes that I ate there were tomato and bread salad [very good] ribolata [a very good soup] and trip salad [might be good but is definitely an acquired taste].

Another speciality is the bistecca all fiorentina but to get a good one will not be cheap.

anything in/near one of the tourist hot-spots is likely to be expensive, ditto restaurants where they have linen tablecloths [which may be good] and/or people outside trying to entice you in [more likely not to be good, but you never know].

Chowhound is a good place to start for serious food recommendations:

I guess I was a little vague in my question as right now I am still in the initial stages of my planning. Thanks everyone for your responses, I'll check them out.

We ate at Sostanza. It was a great place - small and a great vibe. The Butter Chicken, mmmmm. It was our favorite dinner in Florence.

I was just thinking the other day, Ack, that you and I have not crossed paths lately and so it is nice to run into you here!

SJ, I am trying to find the great recommendations we got, in real time, during our Oct. '12 trip to Florence, mostly from Stu Tower, and I just cannot make the search function work!
