What to do for 2 nights/3 days between Prague and Amsterdam
Going to be in Prague for a week (school trip)...ending with 3n/4 days in Amsterdam....I have 2 nights/ 3 days free.
I was thinking about taking train to Dresden for a night and then on to Berlin...now thinking this is impossibly far and not enough time to enjoy either.
What should I do?
Train to Dresden for 2 nights on to Amsterdam?
Car trip through Dresden toward Amsterdam stopping at quaint towns along the way?
Any alternative ideas?

Check into taking a river cruise on the Rhine river. The river runs North into the sea at Amsterdam.
There are tons of companies selling river cruises. You could pick up part of a cruise and get to Amsterdame nice and relaxed.

I agree with Travelforbeer.
You can't see Dresden and Berlin and Amsterdam in that time and really appreciate any of them.
If you were to drive you would need to get a car in Germany and leave it in Germany, and it you would spend most of your time in the car. If you are under 25 it will cost a lot to rent a car, and fuel is expensive too.

"Car trip through Dresden toward Amsterdam stopping at quaint towns along the way?"
Possible but better and cheaper without the car. Most Prague-A'dam connections route you through Nuremberg and do this first leg via express bus in under 4 hours (there are also direct and one-change trains that take a bit longer.) The Franconian towns of Nuremberg, Bamberg, Würzburg, and Rothenburg would all be suitable targets for sightseeing - not all tiny towns but all worthwhile. Bamberg is exceptional. A quainter place like the wine town of Iphofen, on the rail line between Nuremberg and Würzburg, might suit you; it's an old-world place without the hypertourism of Rothenburg. See photos on the town's webpages:

From Nuremberg, all these places are accessible by train. All but Würzburg can be reached on a local daypass good for 2 adults called the VGN Tagesticket Plus, 16.20€, available at ticket machines.

Use a "Bayern Ticket" (29€) for a daytrip to Würzburg - or see it on the way to A'dam. The Residenz is dazzling.

Thanks all. I am already staying in Amsterdam for 4 days...that is enough for this trip (and for specific company on this trip). But this is the 3rd week (after UK, Wales, Prague)...so we will be tired..just wondering what I can reasonably accomplish.
I don't care so much about getting an all -encompassing view of Berlin or Dresden..this is a teaser for a longer Germany trip (sans school) next year....and, I am WELL over 25 so car rental is no problem..even with $6/gal fuel.
I am more concerned with travel time...for a senior citizen and a teen. I want to expose the teenager to many places..we know we will go back. She is already VERY heavily traveled in the US, Caribbean, and Europe...just not Germany/Netherlands areas.
Russ...thank you for your links and ideas. I may skip Berlin entirely and go from Dresden more easterly to Amsterdam using your ideas.
I also like the river cruise ideas..these will give my mom a good break. She is in good shape, a real go-getter, but gets tired as she is 82.
Best,

Dresden is a good idea, but if you think you're going to be tired after that much sightseeing (I agree) I would pick a place in the National Park Saxon Switzerland just south of Dresden, on the border to the Czech Republic. VERY beautiful region with lots of things to do - from easy to strenuous walks/hikes, visits of picturesque small towns/villages (Pirna, Wehlen, Rathen), castles (fortress Königstein) and paddle steamer trips on the river.
Bad Schandau is a small town with accommodation reaching from apartments/B&Bs to luxury hotels. Eurocity trains from Prague to Dresden (-Berlin) stop in Bad Schandau. Commuter trains run every 30 minutes between the town and Dresden, even until midnight.
