what to do at amalfi coast
We are considering a trip to the Amalfi Coast as part of our Italy trip in May and are wondering what would be must-dos or must-sees in the area. Pompeii seems close, so we're excited about that, but not sure what else is there. Any advice on things to not miss if we end up going there?
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

Hi Deb - Amalfi Coast must-sees? You're spoilt for choice
Here are a few for starters:
Positano, Ravello, Amalfi, Capri, Pompeii, Ercolano, Vesuvius, Paestum, Sorrento, Naples, Ischia, Montepertuso/Nocelle, 'Path of the Gods' (- hike), Solfatara, Caserta, Cassino ...
... to name a few.
Hope this helps ...

Hi d,
The AC is a Summer resort. The ancient Romans went there to escape the heat.
The scenery is breathtakingly beautiful.
If Pompeii is a must, I suggest staying in Sorrento.
You might also be interested in the Greek ruins at Paestum.

I enjoyed taking the cable car to the top of Mount Faito (at one of the commuter train stations)... definitely more of a local attraction than foreign tourist.
Using that train line (Naples to Sorrento), everything from the museum in Naples (15 minute walk) to Herculanium to Pompeii, etc is available.
I also suggest renting a car (Hertz has an office in Sorrento) and driving the Amalfi Coast.
If you are a serious archeology buff, the ruins and museum at Paestum (once part of the "Grand Tours" for European aristocrats) are an awesome visit, in many ways better than the more popular sites. But it is a good ways down the coast and the area was otherwise fairly unattractive to us...

Here is what I did, and where I ate, last May. This report includes a day trip to Paestum and a visit to Pompeii.
I recommend staying in the town of Amalfi, rather than in Sorrento. You can reach Pompeii from there by public transport, and all of the hotels offer guided bus tours to the site.

Hi deb,
The AC is known for its gorgeous scenery.
You might wish to visit Paestum for the Greek ruins.

Here is an example of the day trips typically offered by the Amalfi Coast hotels; note that the price for a guided tour of Pompeii is 38 Euro, or 43 if you add Vesuvius:
