In the Cinque Terre, as in all venues subject to crowding, there are many thieves.
One thing you definitely should not do is let your wallet in the outside pockets of the backpack, because that's the pocket thieves open easily.
The thieves spy on you while you make shopping and look where you store your wallet.
Be careful especially when you walk down the stairs because it's the best time for them to open outside pockets of your backpack.
A friend was robbed in this way, unfortunately, and it's no use going to the police to report ...
What not to do in the Cinque Terre ... and not only ...

Naturaly you should keep all of your valuables in places withint your control - and never let go to a bag pack or purse - anywhere - even inside your hotel or hostel.
as for going to the police - of course it's necessary. You will need the paperwork from them to prove your loss and get repayment from your insurance company.
You can also twist tie your zippers/closures or lock. Keep yourself aware of your stuff at all times. You must do as nytrav. says go to the police and file a report. DD had her bp stolen in Geneva @ Xmas at the train station as she put it down beside her to give her ticket $ to the clerk. She lost significantly..Persc. glasses, sun and reg. Custom mouth guard,Meds, etc, etc. No problem with ins. All was paid for except $ (about 300Euros) no hassle, no fuss. But they did require a bonafide list/report rom Geneva police. Id replaced and cost recovered. So beware but don't let this get you in a sweat. Maybe an upscale bp would be interesting but who knows??
