Then take the tram to http://www.ratebeer.com/p/brouwerij-t-ij-amsterdam/200/ for some fresh stuff.

Cannabis from a coffeeshop or cannabis cookies, brownies, etc - only in Amsterdamned can you buy those.

But I think you may be thinking of something to take back home? Wooden shoes all decorated - Delftware - the famous ceramics made in Delft, Holland and flower bulbs from the flower market but be sure they are packaged right and certified for import to the US.

Frites in a paper cone with a squirt of mayo.

Soft serve ice cream in automats--tastes like straight cream.

Drinking Heiniken beer sitting at a sidewalk cafe while the tour boats go by on a canal--cannot be beat.

That's about it.

Tulip-shaped drawstring handbag or keychain from Bylin-very classy, not tacky

Books and other items from the various museum shops-Van Gogh, Rijksmuseum, Rembrandt House, Anne Frank House

A bicycle bell-a fun souvenir, inexpensive, definitely reminds one of Amsterdam. Even if you don't have a bike, you can put it on your desk or on a shelf

To take home - have a look at www.blond-amsterdam.nl/en/. Or bulbs of course, or something from one of the museum shops

To eat, not exclusive to Amsterdam of course, but very Dutch: stroopwafels, poffertjes, pancakes, uitsmijter, appelgebak met slagroom, snert(or erwtensoep) in winter.

To drink: anything but Heineken. dfourh has some good suggestions.

Pal is forgetting that you can go to Colorado for your legal high nowadays.

yeh hetismij2 - I forgot about Mile High Colorado and soon Washington State - one souvenir you see from Amsterdam all over is anything with the city's famous XXX symbol on it - caps, hats, tee-shirts, etc.

I can tell you that the thing my dear Wife loves most to buy are handbags from the gift shop of the Purse and Handbag
Museum. http://www.tassenmuseum.nl/en
A lovely building; used to be the house of the mayor of Amsterdam.

It also has a lovely old fashioned lounge in which I could sit while DW did the tour, and have a sweet Dutch girl bring me a beer while I read the paper. Just try to keep your lady out of the handbag shop!

One souvenir I collect is free - beer coasters from pubs - they never seem to mind if you take one with the local beer's or pub's name on them!
