What is the shortest amount of time you've ever planned a Europe trip in?

This topic of conversation came up today in the break room at lunch.

For me it was a work trip to Sardinia that I found out about a week prior to the flight. Fortunately I already had my passport. Took a plane, auto and ferry to arrive at our destination...but it was a great trip to a place I'd have probably never gone.

As a person who LOVES the planning I'd be hard pressed to plan a vacation in that type of time frame. For me half the fun is the year of planning the details.

I found out that I would have two weeks off instead of one last Thursday, decided on a destination Friday afternoon, and my flight leaves Monday morning for Athens and then Istanbul.

I think my trip is as long as my notice time. It's driving me a bit nuts as I tend to plan like crazy, but I'll figure it out and learn more as I go.

Two days. Got the idea on a Monday; two days later I was on a flight to Italy.

In May 2009, booked flight/hotel/play on a Sunday, to leave on a Thursday for London. I had to buy a guidebook at my transfer airport.

Went in and booked a flight on impulse on a Wednesday, flew to Canada (from New Zealand) that Saturday, then on to the UK about 10 days later. Stayed away for 2 months. I did stay most of the time with (very accommodating) family and friends though, which helped a lot, but even when I travelled elsewhere it was pretty much a case of hopping on a train and then finding a hotel when I got there. Quite liberating really! I'm having fun planning my summer holiday right now, but the unplanned route does have its charms as well.

Where did you go Ellenem and did it work out better than if you had planned well in advance? Do holidays work out better if the detail is planned? I cant not plan because Im always considering where to go next. Some of my best holidays have been the least planned ... Malaysia, and Filey (titter ye not).

After check-in!
We had booked a Silver Wedding trip to Mexico and as we were being given our boarding cards the check-in girl "mentioned" that our departure was delayed because of fog.We told her that we had to get a connection in Amsterdam that we were now likely to miss and she said we'd be put on the next flight(24 hours later). We were only going for 4 nights so we cancelled on the spot. We went directly to the travel agents in the aitport to see where we could go there and then- preferably somewhere we'd never been before.
5 hours later we were in Budapest!

My cousin was working in Bahrain for a French bank. One of his co-workers offered him his house in Lunel, in Languedoc, for a month. My cousin called me from Bahrain and asked if I was interested in meeting him in Lunel. He gave me the address, and forty eight hours later I met him there. I had the best vacation ever, and it was FREE!

For me, shortest has been 1 week. I hate planning (stresses me out big time), so even if I pick the date and buy the tickets 6 months in advance, I'll still wait til the very last minute to start working out details.

A couple years ago my SO and I bought decided on a trip to Beijing/Shanghai a year out, bought tickets 4 months out, then waited til we got on the plane to open up a guidebook and figure out what they heck we were going to do when we got there. Best trip I ever had.
