What is the best/romantic/quiet area to stay in Rome for 1st time visitors?

Lat part of our Honeymoon is going to be spent in Rome. We will be there 3 nights and this is our first time there. Where is a good area to look for hotels. Would like to maybe be in a neighborhood with little cafe's etc...I have read some peoples comments on Rome and I have the impression that Rome is a very noisy city. Not sure if this is true, but probably like to find a hotel that is close to sights but maybe a little quiet. Looking for a diamond in the ruff! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

You do not mention budget.
Look at Hotel Portoghesi north of Piazza Navona.

Check out Sofitel Roma, a lovely 4 star on a quiet side street right off Via Veneto.

We also really enjoy Hotel Capo d'Africa on a quiet street near the Colosseum.

Both have lovely roof top terraces perfect for sharing a bottle of wine. We were often the only ones there.

LAK,

Yes, Rome is noisy on the major streets. Look for hotels with double-paned windows to cut out the noise, or a courtyard facing room, rather than a street facing room.

Also, higher floors help.

Congrats and buon viaggio! You will love Roma!

we stayed in an apartment to the west of the area mentioned by bob, at the other end of the via coronari. it's very local, very quiet, full of character, and very convenient for many of the sites and buses to the rest.

anywhere round there [especially if recommended by bob] should hit the spot.

I thought Tratevere was sooo romantic! It is not Centro Storico but it is definitely much more quaint than it.

I stayed at the Relais Fontana di Trevi and loved it! The staff is excellent. At night there are no tourists snapping away at the fountain and it is super romantic. Barely anyone. My fiance proposed to me on the Spanish steps during that trip and the hotel helped him and a florist plan roses in the room along with champagne for when we got back. We had a classic double but my sister stayed with her husband in a suite with a view of the fountain and it was really big and really nice. Both of us couples slept soundly and had no problems. The breakfast was pretty good too and you get to enjoy it on a rooftop overlooking the fountain.

Just to show how different we all can be...I thought Trastevere was noisy, un-calm, and un-peaceful. Definitely not "a little quiet." If you like noise at night, motorcycles jamming the streets, etc, this is the place to be.Whaetver yo do, DO NOT stay at Hotel San Francesco., What a dump!
If I were going to Rome again, I'd stay up on the hill a bit, and sacrifice being right in the center, for some greenery.. The hotel we almost stayed in (and regret not choosing) is Villa San Pio. You take a subway from there to the center.

We also stayed in Residenza Cellini, which is lovely, with romantic rooms ..but it is not easy walking distance to most sites, and not in a particularly pretty part of town.

You do not mention your budget and that makes a HUGE difference. But really, I've been to Rome 3 times in 3 different hotels (once in summer and twice in winter) and did not ever find noise to be a problem. I suppose if you had your windows flung open on a major street, it could be an issue, but it is simple enough to find a hotel on a quiet street.

If I were to go back to Rome on a romantic getaway, my first choice would be to return to the Albergo del Senato, which is right on Piazza della Rotonda. You can't really get much more romantic than watching the sunset over the Pantheon from one of their upper-floor rooms (with small balconies). There are literally hundreds of restaurants and cafes within walking distance, plus it is a perfect location for first-time visitors to explore the centro storico. The rooms are small but elegant, the service is excellent, and the breakfast is wonderful.

On a slightly smaller budget but an equally excellent location (without the view), I also really enjoyed Residenza Canali, which is on a quiet street just a stone's throw from Piazza Navona. They have a honeymoon suite that looks very nice.

Trastevere is a lovely, quieter, less touristy neighborhood but it is near the Vatican and quite far from the other major sights such as the Colosseum, Forum, and Palatine Hill. I personally would not recommend it for a first-time visit.

The historic center of Rome is extremely walkable, which is one of the reasons it is my favorite big European city. I prefer not to use motorized transportation when I'm in a city, as I love to wander the streets at my own pace, taking photographs and finding interesting shops. If that is what you are looking for, then I highly recommend that you stay in the area of Piazza Navona/Pantheon. You can basically walk to every major sight in the city in less than 30 minutes.

JMO but I find the area around the Senato very noisy and hectic. Even with the double paned windows we heard roaring motocycles throughout the night as well as late night partiers on the street - it was soccer season.

We preferred the Minerve at Piazza Rotunda for a quiet hotel with nicer rooms and overall amenities but it is expensive and these days this part of Rome is just too crowded for our taste. It was nicer 20 years ago.

In a dozen or so visits to Rome we now find ourselves enjoying its more peaceful neighborhoods and find them both pleasant and convenient. But it all depends what you are looking for and prefer.

The Villa San Pio is a good suggestion and rates there are often quite good. We have not yet stayed there but it is always on the short list when we plan a trip.

I second what kfusto said. I would not stay at the Albergo del Senato even if you paid me. It is a noisy and hectic area. The tourists step on each other´s feet. Also I found the Trastevere to look quite rundown in most areas with all the graffiti. We stayed in a beautiful hotel in a very quiet and upscale area (Aventino hill): http://www.aventinohotels.com/inglese/sa/home.htm Not many cafés and restaurants in the area though. We took taxis and walked quite a bit but it was so worth it only for the beautiful surroundings and quietness.

Second Bob's recommendation of the Portoghesi. It is a short walk from the Pantheon but worlds away from the noise and congestion.
