What is the best way to see the Maginot line and Hackenberg?

Are the tours of the Hackenberg fortification given every day? Can we go on our own? We're going early September. We will be coming from Reims and going to Luxembourg City after. Are we close enough to take a tour on our way from one to the other or should we stay over night close to Hachenberg? We toured Normany last September and my husband loved the WW II sites. This trip will take us mostly to wine regions, but I didn't want to leave out the historical sites. (one can not live by wine alone) If anyone knows of any good tour guides, chateaus and must see historical sites in the areas I mentioned, the information would be much appreciated. We will also be staying in Colmar and outside of Dijon, so any must sees or stays in those areas would also be helpful.
Thanks!
