During our travels next summer we'll be driving very close to Liechtenstein as we drive from Bregenz toward Innsbruck. While we like to settle in and immerse ourselves in most of the areas we visit, sometimes we like to check things off the "I've been there" list. We were thinking of getting our car in Bregenz and heading into Liechtenstein for lunch possibly or seeing one site. I've got a few questions:

1) I realize that border crossings are much easier now than they used to be. Do we need to assume that we simply drive into the country (and out) w/out a line at the border (from Austrian side)? Just trying to understand the time constraints for this little jaunt.

2) Assuming we drove in from Feldkirch, is there something on that side of the country you would recommend we stop and see. Any castles on the west side, waterfalls, overlooks, etc? I don't think we want to drive as far as Vaduz.

Yes you just drive in, the only reason for delay is a sudden check or if you have contraband with you, so wine, meat etc.

Going for lunch (i'd go for lunch in Austria) you'll find a lot of business men leaving their offices to go and eat lunch abroad if you are in Lichtenstein. Even my BIL takes sandwiches from Switzerland.

I think Vaduz is the only thing worth seeing, though there are some great walks out to say the country barriers, think a pole and two little sheds (like nutcrakers dance out of) in the middle of a field.

Walks or bike rides up the Rhine are worth it (or take a train up with your bikes and roll back down).

The better walks are on the Swiss side but again eat of spend money in Austria.

I go there every few years to see family and trust me it is not a wonderful place compared to other areas around lake constance or up in the hills of switzerland or Austria

Been twice in Vaduz and once ?
Agree nothing sensational and they close shops very early.
But ticking a box is nice from time to time.

Definitely a box-ticker...had a coffee/pastry bkfst. Walked around (weekday)Vaduz, drove a few miles into the countryside. As far as the tiny countries go, we liked San Marino best, then Lux, followed by Andorra. Of course, there's Vatican City!

Long ago I jogged from Feldkirch into Leichtenstein -there was a border station then but I doubt if there is now though current migrant problems of course can cause this to change - I just went a few miles in and found a bucolic rural setting - rather nice just like Austria and Switzerland between which it is sandwiched.

That was enough for me and yes I ticked off another country though that may not really be the status of Liechtenstein.

if you like small places, try Llívia, which is a Spanish enclave within France, very close to Andorra. we came across it when we were staying in the Pyrenees near-by - they speak their own dialect of French/Spanish, so that as our waitress told us, she speaks 3 languages; while we were sitting in a bar watching the world go by, we heard people switching seamlessly between them.

returning to the subject, we went to Liechtenstein a very long time ago, and weren't blown away. sounds like it's not changed.

We spent our very first day and night in Europe in Triesenberg, Liechtenstein. Loved it. Beautiful alpine scenery. Since then we've been to Switzerland once, Austria and Bavaria 10 times and the Italain Dolomites 4 times. Never been back to Liechtenstein.
