What is a good city near York to spend the DAY (on the way to London)?

So now that I know I am going to visit York, I notice their are quite a few interesting places near by (i.e. Manchester) Which is the best place if I only want to do a day trip.

(I will spend the night if it is an absolute MUST)

WHY do I keep spelling "There" the wrong way?! I have been doing that all week!! (I am a bit of an obsessive perfectionist ... who is no where near perfect )

Are you driving or taking a train? That makes a big difference.

Oh sorry Patrick, I could have sworn I mentioned I would be taking a train! - I must have gotten confused with my other post.

Yeah, sometimes I wish I could drive! But I always enjoy the train.

In that case I'd do a train to Lincoln, less than two hours by train and lots to explore and see there.

I never even heard of it ... but great suggestion! Looks nice. (Buildings remind me a little of Chester)

From Atlanta,
Here's the link to a thread that was started by Ben Haines . You'll find some good information regarding visiting Lincoln.

You are going to find this VERY hard to believe, but I just can't find enough information on Lincoln!

Sure, there are sights about the history, the cathedral etc... but I STILL don't see it on a map. I have no idea where it is. How far is it from York?

I pride myself on being able to find everything online ... this is so FRUSTRATING

HELP!!!

Patrick beat me to it, but I wholeheartedly agree with Lincoln. Beautiful city, wonderful cathedral, and just an all around neat little town to walk around.

Atlanta: Lincoln is in Lincolnshire

That helped didn't it?

Lincoln is on the east side of the country about 75 miles south of York.

Can I do it in a day? Or do I need to spend the night? (which I really don't want to do.) - Will it be easy to get to London from there?

Yes, you can do it in a day. And you can get a train from Lincoln to London in just over two hours with a change in Newark -- numerous time availabilies. If you can hear evensong by the boys' choir in the Lincoln Cathedral, you need to stay late enough for that!

Ok, I just thought of something else ...

Do you know off hand if the train station has lockers where I can store my bag? (I never even thought of this when I was opting for a day trip from somewhere going to somewhere else - I'll have my backpack with me!) There is NO WAY I will be able to carry it all day

Lincoln Central is a pretty small station. According to the website of Central Trains, which operates this station, there are no left luggage facilities. I can't think of any other options.

Not that anyone cares except me Here is what I decided to do:

I will leave York and go straight back to London where I will set myself up at a B&B (either the one I was staying at before I left for York or a different one) and enjoy the rest of my day in London

then in the morning I will take a day trip to Lincoln (that way I will have no luggage and I won't have to worry about leaving early - I was worried about getting to London too late to check in to a B&B)

Ok, glad that is settled ... UNLESS someone complicates it by thinking of ANOTHER city I should see.

There are other choices that take less than 2 hours on the train. Winchester, Brighton, Rochester, Oxford and Cambridge are about one hour, Canterbury, Salisbury and Bath 80-90 minutes.

One of my favorite is Winchester. It is compact and relatively flat for walking. The Cathedral is one of the largest in Europe and burial site of some of England's earliest kings as well as St. Swithin, Isaac Walton and Jane Austen.

During the summer there are guided tours of Winchester College, the oldest public school in England.

The St. Cross Hospital is the oldest charitable institution in England and provides a dole of bread and ale to travellers.

The river walk is particularly lovely in the spring. The houses across the river are on a slight rise and the gardens are very well kept and should be in their glory in May.

There are a few other things to visit also.

BTW, Winchester is southwest of London and has an extensive website:

Thank you JSmith, but I was already planning on most of those already (yes, I have a FULL trip planned!)

My itinerary:
Brighton (to spend my jet-lag days) 2-3nights
London (many nights)
Bath 2-4nights
York 2 nights
Brugge, Belgium 4nights, 1 in Brussels
-Daytrips-
Canterbury (maybe w/ London Walks)
Oxford/costwalds (London Walks)
Lincoln
Warwick
- and I have to look at the Londow Walks brochure to see what else they offer (as far as daytrips)

- I will look at Winchester though and see how it compares to Lincoln (no way I can do both!) This was supposed to be a relaxing trip to just "hang out" etc... I think I need to rethink this! (It's just that I KNOW it will be my last time in Europe and I want to make it count)
