What I know about train travel and car rental in France

I have just booked (for no additional expense) our car rental and train travel in France for late September. I went through a travel agent this time. We booked a compact carto pick up at Avignon TGV station for 9 days at $398 US through AutoEurope. Our CDW, and additional driver was covered using my American Express Business Management account. We do not need international driving permits because both of our CA licenses were renewed longer than one year prior to travel.

Our route is Paris-Avignon,Avignon-Geneva,Geneva-Paris.

We booked France-Swiss passes rather than point to point and saved about $50 each as well as being afforded an additional train ride should we desire same.
We could book seat reservations no sooner than 60 days prior to travel.
