What happens to check in bag if I leave country in transit (Germany)
Hi Guys,
So, I'm going to be visiting Batam, Indonesia this summer, and I the flight that I am looking at has a layover in Frankfurt for 12.5 hours. I have a friend who lives in the city of Basel, Switzerland, and I understand that the ICE train has a direct route from the Frankfurt Airport to the central station in Basel. While I believe that this is doable, my main concern is my check in duffel bag. I'm planning on checking it all the way to Kuala Lumpur (my destination city). What will happen to my duffel bag? I've heard that the bag will be delayed to its destination and such.

Hi jpqwerty,
The train from Frankfurt airport to Basel takes 3h in each direction, so that's 6h of transport. You'll need to get back to the airport at least 2h before your flight, so that's 8h of your layover time gone.
That will leave you with only 4h with your friend in Basel.
The walk-up fare for this journey is 85 € in each direction.
Perhaps your friend can meet you in Frankfurt city, or in Heidelburg (about 1h from Frankfurt airport); that would give you much more time on the ground to do something. The walk-up fare to Heidelburg is 25€
You can check the train schedules and prices at
www.bahn.com
As for your bag, if it's checked in, it will be in the same place whether you are sitting in the airport or on a train to elsewhere.
Have fun as you plan!

One thing I didn't like about leaving my luggage so long in luggage handling area was that I had more incidences of my luggage rummaged during long transits. It was possible that they were all legitimate inspections.

As Gretchen said, "Have your friend meet you somewhere"
Offer to pay the train fare for your friend to meet you at the Frankfurt airport (or main train station in Frankfurt)- that way you would have the most time together. Go eat someplace nice in Frankfurt and reminisce...
Have a great trip!!!
