Half board (mezza pensione): Breakfast and one other meal usually dinner included
Full board (pensione completa): Breakfast, lunch and dinner included
This is quite normal at resort hotels (but rarely in cities) in high season, where either is often compulsory. Often pensione menu offers fewer choices than regular menus, and there may be supplement for more expensive dishes.

If you are talking about half board, you take the dinner on the day you arrive and finish with breakfast the following day. If mezza pensione is compulsory, you eat at the hotel or you forfeit the cost, as there is no reduction if you don't take it.
