Westport Co Mayo (Ireland) report

Hi All,

I actually did write some things down this time for anyone heading this way. I have been in Westport for 5 days at a wedding last week so here are a few reccommendations:

To Stay:
We rented an apartment through Wesport Estates and leasing and got an apartment for 395.00 euro for 4 nights as opposed to the wedding hotel that was charging 220.00 Euro per night! The apartment was on Market Lane off the main street and was massive and very central.....downside was it needed a sweep and wash of the wood floors and a lick of paint but was nice enough for the time. There is a cafe literally outside the door that saved me on a few occasions when coffee was immediately needed in the morning! They had several other properties and also we considered the Harbour Mill apts which I may try next time. Friends stayed at the Cinnamon Wharf apts which also were rated well by them. Only drawback for those was they were a taxi or longer walk to the main village.

Eats:
I like Torrino's in Market lane but did not have time to eat here this trip. Good Italian and large selection and some outdoor seating. On the main street and there is a Market Lane entrance is Cosy Joe's Pub that has been re-vamped. I ate my annual steak here with lovely pototoes, onion rings nice sauce...14.00 euro which was pretty reasonable I thought. Good pub food and some veggie options.

Il Volcano - Top of the village past the Clock pub on the right up the hill (How sad are these directions but they are accurate). This was one of the better Italian meals I had in a while. There were 11 of us recovering the day after the wedding and with wine, starters and some deserts it came to 35.00 pp with tip. Our friend is Italian and got chatting to the owner and we all ended up with complimentary Limoncello at the end and my other half thought it would be hilarious to tell them it was my birthday and dessert was pushed in front of me with a candle...mortified but funny as it was actually a friends husband's B-Day next week and i though it was for him.

Breakfast - Kathy's Kitchen. This is not really my type of breakfast but the gang loved the mini breakfast for six euro and it was a meat feast with eggs. Good to set you up for the day.

Friends living there said Sol Rio (?) above a pub on the main street was decent and a good price for dinner. For a more upmarket place try the Linen Mill Restaurant on the road for Hotel Westport and is walkable from the village. Its beside a furnishings shop and duvet/down outlet. Also the Lemon Peel has also been reccommended for dinner.

To Do:
The Rossmoney seaweed baths have closed but there is a nice Spa in Hotel Westport that also do seaweed baths, massages etc. I did not make it here but some in the party had swims and massages and reccommended it. Also Most hotels with a pool/leisure centre will allow non residents to use the facilities for 7-12 euro depending on the place so do take advantage of it.

If we had nmore time outside the wedding duties we would normally go to Lenane, Croake PAtrick (Not climbing) some of the local beaches for a few rocks (I use them as door stoppers they are so big).

Oh forgot the most important - PUBS!

We ended up in the Porter house on the main street a lot. The first night a musician from Matt Molloys beside it told me they would be playing so we went over and met the gang. The next night we had to keep the brides father and some of the husbands busy while their wives got ready for the net day so we went back to the porter house. 2 guys were playing Guitar and flute/whistle. The brides father is also a musician and ended up playing during the guitarists breaks for the crowd. Great time had.

The last night after dinner in Il Volcano we headed to Matt Molloys in the back room for music. It was jammed but fun. We also saw a girl from a big hens party that was at the restaurant ask to sing in the pub. They were a bit wild but I kept thinking she was familiar. When she took the guitar it clicked. Anyone remember the first Fame Academy in the UK? It was Sinead. She was pretty good but we wanted the band back and had a huge sing a long.

Afterwards as you do we headed to the Disco when the pun closed. Don't bother! We paid a tenner, got one drink, bar shut and music stoppen in an hour. Also I saw someone steal a drink from my boyfriend just after he ordered and was paying and saw this when I was on a balcony. He copped on and said something but she denied it and he could not do anything as it was a young girl and her boyfriend was staring hassle then. If I was there I would have taken it back from her but a man could not do that without trouble in a place like that. Another crowd also stole drinks off the table from our group. Absolute animals mostly 18/19 year olds. The place is Called Oscars in a hotel off the main street. Not reccommended.

Ok finished!

nice report Siobhan!

i actually went to Westport on my hen weekend in July and had a great time. It is quite a big destination for hen & stag parties though - we met quite a few others.

We stayed at the Harbour Mill Apartments which were really nice - clean, spacious & well equipped, but they were a taxi-ride away from the town centre.

We ate in Torrino's which is excellent. We also went to the nightclub - Oscar's - not really my cup of tea either but we did have fun anyway!

Great report Siobhan. We spent a couple of nights at the Porter House also. Matt Molloy's was packed and we sat down and ended up chatting with Kevin and Oclan, the guitarist and whistle player you mention. They do a great job of trad with a twist as Kevin has a wild sense of rhythm which makes it a lot of fun. Oclan run photo tours around Mayo and has a built in audience, though many breaks last forever as he tends to have to cater to their needs. As I remember, they are there Tues, Thurs and Sun. Definitely worth stopping in.

Hi Cailin you must be back from your honeymoon now. Congrats!

Westport did not really have many hens that weekend compared to the winter so it was not too bad. I almost booked the Harbour Mill and may do so next time as they seem nicer. I like the pub there on the water, I think its the Towers.

The nightclub we were at was Oscars and I will never set foot in there again after watching the whole scene with my boyfriend and the robbing of drinks while I was above in the balcony. We are in out 30's and the girl and boyfriend were probably 18-19 and I was afraid the young guy was going to start a fight because my boyfriend would not back down about the drink the girl took. Maybe her boyfriend did not even know she took it but I was aftraid of mine being manhandled by the bouncers if the guy started something. It is obscene what we paid for 1 hour. Next time we will go back to our friends house and get the guitars out for a better night and no closing time!

Bill it must have been them as it was a thurs and I recall one musician named as Kevin. Great night.
