Western Burgundy, 5 weeks, 2 kids

Hello, and thank you in advance for any help. We are fortunate to be staying in a friend's house in a very small town near Toucy in Burgundy. We are a family of four (ages 44, 41, 6, and 2) with access to a car. We're excited. Do you have any recommendations of day trips (maybe less than 4 hours in the car round trip)? I've read up on Fontenay, Vezelay, and Guedelon.

We love hiking, horses, outdoor adventure, indoor adventure, settling in to a place, history, the Roman empire, fairies, reading, Camus, burgundy the liquid, farmstays, backpacking, birding, and nature. We have never really spent time in France (or Germany), but have seen much of the rest of the world and a bit of Europe.

We plan to take a handful of overnight trips (Paris, Versailles, maybe Arles, Camargue, Brittany, Besancon). The timeframe is Late July to the end of August. (thank you to Sassafrass who recommended the Camargue, though not in August.) If you click my screen name, you will see this is a sabbatical that I had thought we might spend in Rome or Iceland, but we lucked in to a visit with a friend, and into a stopover in Iceland for five days on the return flight.
