Hi, we're flying into Marco Polo Airport and are spending 4 nights in Venice - for the other 6 days of our holiday we have hired a car and so far have booked 2 nights in Trieste and quite fancy 1 night in Cividale del Fruili - do you think it's a good idea to spend the full 6 days of this part of our holiday in Fruili only, or would it be better to split up these days perhaps going to another area (Trentino etc)? I know it's a pretty personal kind of question but I would appreciate any opinions. Thanks

When do you go there? In summer it is nice but before it can be bad weather in the mountains.

Trentino is nice but everything you can see in Trentino you can see in Friuli. I like the food in Friuli. You can drive from Friuli to Trentino and it is beautiful. But you should only do it in summer. Go from Civedale to Sauris di Sotto (and eat the speck) and after go to Cortina d'Ampezzo. After that you drive to Canazei and Bolzano. Then you are in the Trentino. Do you go back to Venice airport? You can leave your car in Bolzano or Trento and take a train back to Venice airport. It is easy.

But if you are going next month or easter, it is better to stay in Friuli. It is beautiful to see Aquiliea, Palmanova, Udine. Gorizia and Udine have very nice food and markets. There is good wine from the Isonzo valley.

Thanks massimop, I an going over Easter - so I should rather take your 2nd option? Is there anywhere near Cividale del Fruili where we can take a drive to see the river and the gorges there (where people go to hike, I have picked up)?

Yes. For easter it is better not to go to the high mountains. When you are in Civedale it is very simple to go everywhere in your car. You can go to Slovenia also. There are many nice places for walking in the valleys of the Isonzo and Natisone. I am not certain exactly where you want to go but the roads in Friuli are good roads. You can read this information in English

May be you are interested in San Cassiano caves (close to Divazza/Sovenia) or small coastal cities like Pirano/Slovenia too. Or check the hill and mountain area: Fusine Laghi, Krajnska Gora, Bled Jezero.

Thanks massimop for all your help, and for those links - we may take a little hike - funny we are staying at Aurora B and B, what a coincidence! Also, thanks for the caves suggestion neckervd, I'll google them, thanks too to StCirq - the thing for me is that it is such a short holiday, I am quite happy rather to stick to the Italy side. But I realise you are just answering a question of mine, I suppose I am just thinking aloud!
