weekend trips

Hi All,
My sister and I are going to be studying Italian for a month in Firenze. We've already got weekend trips planned to Roma and Elba. The last weekend is up for grabs at this point and as people on here have said plan in advance for Italy... I'm wondering what the actual travel time by train would be from Florence to Naples? It looks fairly far... would we be better off going to Milan and Venice and can you do those two cities leaving Friday afternoon returning Sunday night? Or does anyone have any other places that are not to be missed that are easily accesible from Florence?
Thanks!

You made me feel breathless and tired just reading of your weekend plans. Florence to Elba?? Florence to Naples would be exhausting and such a contrast that you might be disappointed. You could visit Milan OR Venice in a weekend but you'd be doing them and yourselves a disservice to try to fit in both. Personally I'd opt for a lazier weekend in Siena or San Gimignano, both of which are easily accessible by bus from Firenze

Why not trying to see something radically different? Instead of art cities you might consider spending a week-end in the woody and not too touristy area of Casentino, east of Arezzo. As an alternative you might consider moving north towards the Langhe area. Also, why not spending a week-end in Umbria?

Umbria is very quaint and full of fantastic little Italian cities (Perugia, Assisi). Venice is AMAZING...
