Weekend in London; looking for the best Indian food
We will be passing through London to visit friends. We expect to have little free time and would like to make the best of it. We'd appreciate your reccomendation on the best Indian restaurant in London. If there was one thing you could do while your were in London, what would it be?

Percy -- it would REALLY help if you provide the link to the thread where you posted about Indian food in London.
You post quite a lot and a few weeks ago is many pages back. (Take a look - you might be surprised)

"it would REALLY help if you provide the link to the thread . . . " OR - just post the relevant advice here.
(BTW -- I did do a quick look-see and went all the way back to Aug 11 and didn't find it -- but the thread's title may have had nothing at all to do w/ Indian Food)

I too looked back and couldn't find Percy's thread or comments.
We have a favorite Indian, culled some time ago from chowhound.com, and regularly returned to. However, it's off the beaten path and even inconvenient. Fabulous, though and not expensive.

This place is very popular and it's good to get there early.
My next suggestion would be to hit the London boards at Chowhound.

I am going to London soon and wanted a great indian restaurant. I asked a person who knows a chef in London. She recommended Amaya..she said - Adore it, Indian, truly sensational,
Trishna- another glorious, upmarket Indian, second only to Amaya (We went here because we couldn't get in to Amaya)
anyone else been to either. I have reservation for end of september at Amaya

Another option if you are thinking of going a bit upmarket - one of my most favorite places to stay in London is the St.James Court www.stjamescourthotel.co.uk/ at 54 Buckingham Gate near the palace. It houses a couple dining options, one of which is the Michelin starred Quilon www.quilon.co.uk which gets great reviews.

Unless your friends are pathologically averse to restaurants, you're far likelier to get a sensible recommendation from them than anyone on this board about an Indian restaurant that meets, this week, your tastes, budget and timetable.
London's almost certainly a great deal bigger, in travelling time, than wherever you live - and no-one here can possibly know whether, for example, Tayyab is the kind of place you'd appreciate.
There's no such thing, BTW, as London's "best" Indian restaurant.

If you want something fairly convenient I used to go to Cafe Spice Namaste. It is near the Tower of London and you can book on Open Table. I haven't been there in years but remembered liking it. Kind of Indian fusion in a way.... http://cafespice.co.uk/

According to my Curry House Bible Chutney Mary's is one of the best curry houses in London.
Cinammon Lounge is rated and the cook there is frequently on Saturday Kitchen BBC food programme.
TA rates "Roots an N1".
My footprints book mentions Khans at Westbourne Grove "Probably one of the biggest and most popular" curry houses.
We had a great curry at Riatha in Paddington, but I am no expert on curry houses in London.
Completely irrelevant as its a long trip just to have a curry, but Manchester has a great curry district called Rusholme.

Steve may have meant Cinnamon Club:
http://www.cinnamonclub.com/
Have a look at the website, even if you plan to go elsewhere. And they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, very unusual in my experience. In a former library. I plan to go at the first opportunity.

Chutney Mary is very nice and upmarket but too fancy with small portions.
My idea of a great Indian is something in Southall. So if you are near Heathrow it is ideal for getting to Southall. I used to enjoy Brilliant but have not been for years. There is another one called Madhu's Brilliant which is also very good. And Mantra in Hounslow, I like the food there very much. Gawdy interior, interesting and different menu, kulfi to die for.

stevelyon, Rusholme is passe now. Lots of the restaurants there got closed down hygiene-wise and many now seem to have changed to shisha cafes. In recent years the good restaurants have slid down the list.
The restaurants in the city worth going to, like Rajdoot, East z East, Akbars etc are far better than anything Rusholme can offer.
