Week in Austria
My husband and I have traded our timeshare week for a week in St. Johann im Pongau, Austria the first of September. Can anyone tell me if we will be able to take public transportation to Salzburg or Munich for day trips? Or will a rental car be necessary? Any ideas on sights near there that are not to be missed? Thanks for any information you can provide.

mThe train station in St Johann in Pongau has connections to most places in Austria, so you can always take the train (direct to Salzburg, one change for Innsbruck or Munich). But for smaller journeys, there are public buses to get you around. The tourist information in the town will be able to assist you with timetables, details, etc once you're there.
For many of the places around the region, you can easily take the train, but for places like, for example, the Liechtensteinklamm (stunning gorge with waterfall and hiking trails) you can take the bus (or walk). To get to Berchtesgaden, the Salzkammergut (Salt Mines district) or Mondsee a car would be an advantage for sightseeing. Werfen, however, is just up the road so you could do the train there.
These are just a few things in the region - you could venture further into Bavaria if you wanted to visit Neuschwanstein, Herrenchiemsee, etc, but I've tried to keep things within the region for ease of travel. You only have a week, so you'll certainly have plenty of places to choose from to fill the week.

Hi,
"Der Dachstein" cable car trip in Ramsau am Dachstein isn't far and well worth the trip. Not only are the views from the top outstanding, but there's also the Ice Palace, SkyWalk and Suspension Bridge plus a restaurant at the top.
Zell am See is also worth visiting for a day and nearby.
