Jim
Take a look at either of the following:
www.euroshell.com or www.cwlease.com
Both allow you to plot itineraries which will indicate mileage and drive times.

I always use www.iti.fr, which also has an English version. www.michelin.fr or .com might be better, but it's not free (not outrageously expensive, though).

Jim-
Getting the directions before leaving home is a great idea. I would also suggest that you find a good map of France. It really is just like driving at home. Their autoroutes are duplicates of our interstates. Although they don't have as many. I had no problem driving from Paris through Normandy, the Loire Valley, etc.
It also helps to take along someone to act as navigator while you drive if at all possible. I definitely think that driving is the best way to see France. The towns you find along the way are quaint and offer a chance to see how most French people live.

By the way, if you can make sense of driving in Le Mans, I applaude you! It was by far the most frustrating city to drive in. I almost killed a little old lady who walked right out in front of me. Thank God the car had good brakes!

Enjoy.

Just got back from 9 days driving in France. 3 items are helpful.
1. As mentioned above, use CWlease web site for trip tics.
2. Supplement this with a Michelin map, we used the Europe atlas.
3. For cities you are visiting, contact the tourist boards and get the city maps.

lastly, if you already have reservations at hotels and they have e-mail, contact them for any advice on directions to their location. Have a great time.
