Weather in Scotland in late December

I was in Aberdeen and Inverness second week of January several years ago. Aberdeen was very cold, windy, sleeting. Not pleasant to be outdoors. Inverness was chilly, cloudy with some blue peeking through, but dry - pleasant for walking if bundled up with hat and gloves. Also went over to Poolewe in western highlands, on Loch Ewe, where the weather was sunny and mild and very nice for walking around the Loch to Inverewe Garden. All this within the same week.
But as Janis noted, the days were very short, and dim. Sunrise may have been as early as 9, but it didn't really get light until 10. And daylight started to fade by 3.

I've been commuting to Scotland, on and off, throughout winters for decades.
The weather's as unpredictable as in England, but colder on average (which doesn't mean colder on any given day). Snow's not particularly likely in Glasgow/Edinburgh,and the ski slopes near Inverness have struggled to get enough snow to operate even in February the last few years. Wettest and warmest in Glasgow: coldest in Inverness. Colder inland.
Don't be surprised if it's sunny, crisp and well above freezing. The only things predictable are you won't get sunstroke and the daylight hours will be short.

It will be cold and damp (I think I can guarantee that). However, we haven't had a white Christmas in years. We often get white New Years tho'.
That, I think, holds true for Aberdeen and Inverness. Edinburgh and Glasgow I'm less sure of.
