weather in Sardinia
I'm doing some research for my daughter who is getting married next October. She wants to go to Europe and her fiance wants to go to a beach.
Can someone tell me if Sardinia is warm enough for the beach in mid to late October ( the wedding is 10/18/08)? If not, can anyone suggest an alternative.

lottery time!
we have been to Sardinia for the last two Autumns both in October (and twice previously in May) - the weather changed both times in October just as we were leaving (mid October). Last year the clouds and rain appeared 30 minutes prior to our flight home. Before that we had enjoyed a week of 25oC and cloudless days - perfect for the beach (and the beaches are perfect).
Sardinia is not the place to be in the rain - most of its attraction relates to the stunning coastline and beaches.
Sicily may be a better bet at this time of year both in terms of the weather lottery and the culture available if you lose the weather lottery.
Let me know if you would like any hotel suggestions on Sardinia we have covered most of the island

Perhaps Sicily would be better.
( and perhaps cheaper?) Might not be the best way to start off married life-- to be on a beach in the rain-- especially if one half of the equation's preference is Cabo San Lucas. It would be a shame, though, not to go to Italy. My future son-in-law is Sicilian and speaks Italian fluently.

Mark----what was the weather like in May? Sardinia is one area of Italy we have yet to visit, and it looks very appealing. But we are planning our trip for the last half of May and wonder if it will be a bit on the chilly side for actually enjoying the beaches and other outdoor activities. I know there's no sure-fire way to predict this, but I'd appreciate your input.
Also, if we do decide to do Sardinia, what's the best way to fit it into an itinerary? I guess what we are looking for is a clue as to what city to depart from and return to. Did you fly there or take a ferry from somewhere?
Once we figure this out, we will need to decide on where to stay on the Costa Smerelda and where else might be a good home base for seeing the rest of the island.

at the end of October the main resort in Sardinia are closed I agree Sicily is much better of that time of the year and plus they can have Sun and a look at the surrounding such Etna ,Siracusa the best resort to stay is Taormina so Romantic

The weather should be OK in May - days should be pleasantly warm the evening could be a bit chilly - rain is a possible problem.
Where are you travelling from? There are three main airports on the island - Cagliari, Olbia and Alghero. All are served by low cost operators and if you book now there will be very cheap flights available.
What's your hotel budget - the standards are very varied - we always stay in villas. Be very careful about shelling out a small fortune on what is described as 5 star - my parents have done this only to end up banging on the Italian Tourist board's door asking how much they were bribed for the extra 2 stars.
We would definitely suggest in terms of location, standards etc :
La Coluccia - mid priced 4 star - one of the most stunning designs that you could imagine
Hotel Capo D'Orso - good location and food
Chia Meridien - very good location near the great beach at Chia
Forte Village - expensive but worth it. The location isn't great and neither is the beach - facilities are beyond question.
We have stayed at Residence Capriciccola on Cala Di Volpe - cheapish at £400 for an apartment and pretty basic but it is the only way to stay on Cala Di Volpe for less than a film star's budget.
We have seen most of the Med other than Sicily and the Cote D'Azur - Cala Di Volpe is the most stunning 5 miles of coastline in the Med. Its were Bond's Lotus Esprit came out of the water and is home to The Hotel Cala Di Volpe - if you can afford it just stay - its a legend.
One thing that we have done in the past which makes for a great two centre break is a week in Tuscany then the ferry to Olbia for a week on the beach.
