Weather in Bernese Oberland -late May, early June

I have seen a few weather charts - just wondering what people's experiences are in terms of the weather in late May, early June in the Bernese Oberland. I wanted to visit the top of Jungfrau, but will see Interlaken and Bern as well. Is this the driest time of the year?

The reason I am asking this is I am getting ready to finalize my trip plans. I will either leave for Europe June 1st or a week later. I would be in Switzerland either Jun 7th or May 31st if I leave a week earlier. I was wondering because from my experiences in the American Rockies, one week can make a difference between things being snowed under or not. I will not be driving.

Suzanne:

We were in the Bernese Oberland around June 11th 2000 and the weather was sunny in the morning and drizzly in the afternoon although it rained a little in Grindelwald in the morning one day. That's why we were glad to go to the Jungfraujoch in the a.m. even though we were packed like sardines in the train because by early afternoon the clouds came, it began to drizzle and you can't see anything with the fogs. The B.O. especially high up in the mountain can be tricky-weather-wise. But at least no snow!!

I stayed in the B.O. several times in the last couple of years. I had warm and sunny weather in early June, but some rain, too. Once I experienced snowing down to 1300 m in early July! You see you can never be sure about the weather.

Usually we have a short time of cold and rainy weather (snow in the mountains) even around 10th/11th of June. We call it "Schafskälte" in German. But it lasts only 2 or 3 days, and you can go to Bern, Thun ... etc. for shopping and sightseeing.

Generally late May/early June is not good for hiking in the mountains (still snow on the trails), but if you take the cable cars and cog-wheel trains just to enjoy the splendid views from the top it is no problem.

Ingo

My experiences in Switzerland are those of Ingo's. I also have been in the rain and fog in late September. Last year, in Austria, I was there in early September and we saw the sun rarely for two weeks.
So you never know. One factor is a given: the trails above 5,000 feet will still be snowed in or at least extremely muddy until the end of June.
I find late August, early September the best potential time, but mountain weather does not do what you want it to.
