We were NOT going to Europe this year --- but

We were definitely NOT going to Europe this year as we had gone to Estonia and the Czech Republic in May and are doing a train tour of part of Canada this May, which will more than use up our travel budget.

Then I foolishly ran a wishful trip through an airfare site just for fun, and up popped an incredibly low open-jaw fare from Seattle to Frankfurt and back from Paris for $554 in September. I could hardly believe it! That will let us visit my Son and Granddaughter in Belgium/Germany, and still get to spend some time in Paris. How could I resist? After a quick consult with my dear Wife I jumped on the fare before it disappeared.

Now I will be pestering you nice folks about catching trains from Frankfurt airport, etc. etc., so brace yourselves over the coming months. I'm really excited!

www.bahn.de/en has all the info you need on catching trains from the airport, which has two train stations -regional or local and Fernbahnhof or long distance station. And check my favorite train info sights - www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com + www.ricksteves.com.

Don't forget to have a beer in Belgium with me or a glass of wine in Paris. (not vice-versa, it would be catastrophic).

Already some good news : Frankfurt airport and Frankfurt Flughafen Hauptbahnhof are 200 meters apart. Just the time for a café.

Ich wunsche ihnen eine gutte Fahrt ! Bon voyage, très cher.

Ps :
After a quick consult with my dear Wife I jumped on the fare before it disappeared.

Sure it wasn't :
After a quick jump with my dear Wife I consulted on the fare before it disappeared. ????

I get your meaning, Wo, but at 86 my "jumps" are, sadly, rather limited to air fares. :'(

I would very seriously like to take you up on the chance to buy you a beer or wine, as well as dinner, wherever/whenever we could get together. I doubt it would be in Belgium as my Son lives near a tiny out of the way village named Welkenraedt. Paris sounds more possible.

I thank you for the info on Frankfurt, Pal. I have found the fares and schedules, and can get the lower fares when booking opens up later in the year.

Bedar & Marvelousmouse, I found that fare on Skyscanner. When I put in my parameters it came up with three "Deals". They were $864 for Vayama, $862 for Expedia, and $554 for Priceline. That seemed really weird, and possibly even a scam, but when I ran it out it went through and I even have my seat assignments already.

Even better is that the flights are Air France (run by Delta), only one short stop going over, and non-stop coming back. An added bonus is that, as Delta Club members, we can use the Air France or Delta lounges. If you have never used the Air France lounge in CDG, you have a very pleasant surprise coming to you!

I have found Skyscanner extremely valuable but also have used Google Flights to find extremely reasonable fares from the midwest to Europe ($765 for 2 RT tickets CVG to CDG, late Feb. on Air Canada and $800 for 2 RT tickets, CVG to ZRH in August on Delta.) Google Flights has a feature which allows for price alerts to a particular market. Blows the travel budget for 2017. There are airfare deals out there, just be ready to jump as they do not last.

I found that fare on Skyscanner.

Thank you for the info. I just checked it from my home base to AMS. Wow! KLM and AF fares are about $400 cheaper than Delta, but are for the same exact flights.

That is crazy goo deal! I am going to start checking on there too. I never use the discount sites but usually just check the airlines directly. last year we flew our whole family ( 12 people) to Italy from Nashville and the flights were 1600 a piece!!

I don't want to jinx anything, but my family is considering a trip this summer, too, having gone last summer as well.

I have found affordable airfares ... but it will require a looong drive to a big airport. As we have more time than money in the summer, it might just be worth it.

Was looking for your thread and found an old one of you Nuke, and realized that you have family in Welkenraedt.
I recommend to go to 'côté comptoir' on the place.

Been there recently, excellent (add 15€ per bottle of wine, there is a 'droit de bouchon' on the price of the bottle sold at 'prix caviste'). So I took a very expensive wine in order to dilute the cost of the cork, obviously. Good wines for finally cheap price.

There is also a very good Frietkot on the way to Henri Chapelle but forgot the name and location ;-)

(My brother lives in Welkenraedt, small world).

I was surprised that my thread, that had been zapped, has magically reappeared. I thank whatever Poster and/or Moderator made that happen!

I was also surprised to hear from you, WoinParis, that you know Welkenraedt. It is indeed a small world. My son lives on a small farm off Rue d'Lyser, on the way to Henri Chapelle. I have been to the American Cemetery there, but must confess I have never been in Welkenraedt itself. The Cote Comptoir sounds interesting, but I can't locate it by "walking" around the Place des Combattants with Google. Give me a clue. Also I'm not familiar with the term "Freikot". Educate me, please.

Another clue you could give me would be how to contact you so we could have the honor of taking you to lunch/dinner when we are in Paris.

Hello
The honor will be mine. Really looking forward to meeting you in Paris. I am mostly in Paris on tuesdays and wednesdays - and the night inbetween. Unfortunately you'll see the less interesting half of myself, my other half works in Belgium...
Please e-mail me at ikkekmk @ gmail dot com (and allow for a few days, it is a dead address).
Mvg.
