Want to visit Pompeii/Amalfi in a day trip - Possible?

Hi all. We will be visiting Rome in 2 weeks and I really want to do a day trip to Pompeii and Sorrento/amalfi coast. There are 6 in my family: 2 adults, 4 children - 2,2,11, 16.

What's the best way to get there since there will be 6 of us? I really can't spend a fortune. I would like to visit Pompeii and if any way possible, go over to Sorrento / amalfi coast area for a few hours for the views.

I know there is a train that can take you to Pompeii - couldn't quite follow the website to easily. Never could find a timetable. Not sure of what train to actually take.

Would it actually be cheaper to find some kind of driver / tour to do this?

Thanks for any input,
Tanya
