I recommend a private guided tour of Ancient Rome...colosseum, Pantheon, Roman Forum, etc. Otherwise you're just looking at ruins and you won't know what they are. We enjoyed Francesca Caruso. She charges 40 euros per hour for your family or group. We had her for 3 hours which was perfect for us. On this message board, the two most popular agencies for this in Rome are Enjoy Rome, and Context Rome
Enjoy Rome tours usually have larger groups than CR, are shorter, and are less expensive
Context Rome (formerly known as Scala Reale, search for that name on this message board and find universal praise)
tours are each about 3-4 hours, groups are 6 or fewer people, guides are art/history/architecture teachers and scholars who are also well versed in making their tours entertaining.
Their Forum/Colosseum tour and their Vatican tour are very highly praised.
