We finally got to visit the Pyrenees in August this year. I've put together the photos and some description from our first hike there. Up to a dramatic breach in a ridge known as La Breche de Roland, which actually forms part of the border between France and Spain. We started from the town of Gavarnie, and drove the rental car to the starting point parking lot, which was already overflowing around 9:30 AM.

Got some nice photos, shown at the link below. The photos and description should be helpful for those trying to decide on a hike in the Pyrenees. There are so many to choose from, but we didn't find anything like this online before going. Pictures and discussion also gives an idea of the hike's difficulty. Lucky for us, we had great weather. It would have been a lot more difficult if we'd had to scramble over slippery wet rocks much of the way.

Nice report. We stayed in Luz St Sauveur last year. I am not fit enough to do that climb. We did go up to Col des Tentes and walked up for an hour before returning. It is beautiful country. We also walked into Gavarnie and really liked the Cirque de Troumouse. We managed to do several walks that suited my level . My husband could have done more challenging hikes but is handicapped by me!!
I also enjoyed your Gorges report. We are planning a visit to the Var next year but maybe not that hike !

Thanks rhon. Sounds like you got to see a lot of stuff we didn't see. We were only on the French side for two days and the Spanish side for two days and did three hikes. We had a book with about a hundred Pyrenees hikes in it, so we knew we only scratched the surface!

I'll be posting the photo-stories from the main Cirque du Gavarnie hike today, and then the Ordesa hike on the Spanish side next weekend probably. The main Gavarnie hike is really, really easy. You can even go only 2/3 and then stop and a big bar/resto and watch the falls from there.

We also had a book that covered the whole of the Pyrenees. We went as far as the bar/restaurant, but we were there in October so it was closed. We also went across to Cauterets and up to Pont d'Espagne and walked up to Lac de Gaube which was great - a challenge for me, but so worth it . We are in our sixties and have never done anything like this before, so it was special. You look a bit younger. I am still trying to find the opportunity to drop " When we were hiking in the Pyrenees " into the conversation LOL but I am not really that person.

Beautiful pictures. Some people pray for a world without war. I pray for a world without scree. It can ruin a nice hike.

lol xcountry. Screeeee! Always loved that word It wasn't bad at all on this hike. There was some, but nothing too bad. Definitely wouldn't make that a deciding factor!
