Votes Please - How many days in Venice?
About to book hotel. We will be in Italy for 20 nights in August (August, ugh, I know). Venice is a must-see for us, and we can spend 1-4 full days there. We want to see the major sites, but really want to walk into the back streets to see more of the local life and get away from the crowds.
I'd appreciate your opinions as to how many days to allocate to Venezia? Thanks.

And save one day to do the islands by vaporetto boats.
Not only the de rigueur island, Murano, with the glass-blowing shops, but those a bit farther away - Burano and Torcello, both overrun with wild cats as is Venice itself, sees relatively few tourists and are a delight.
The best reason for doing the water trip is only then can you glimpse the visual feast that Venice is when seen from across the water - much as it must have amazed ancient mariners who sailed into it during Venice's Golden Age from the 1500-1700 era.
Just to see Venice hovering on the water is a real treat.

In order to do it justice, definitely 4 days. I've been a total of 10 in two trips and still have not seen everything I want to. Four days is not too many...and is actually just right for a first trip, IMO.

Absolutely agree with the opinions above - we spent 5 nights there for our first visit in 2002 and will be spending another 5 there in September.
We do prefer the easy pace - we don't race around ticking off sights, rather we enjoy meandering around, stopping for coffee, long, lingering meals and sometimes an afternoon nap too!

Well, Ashields, we have to spend a couple days in Perugia. The rest of our time, we've got to divide between, Venice, Florence, Tuscany, Rome, and also hope to go to Lake Como and Cinque, even if for only a day or two each.

I'm going to agree with Chris, I think it'd be worth having an extra day in the CT. At some point, you'll probably get tired of museums, lines, crowds, and churches and would appreciate having a couple of days where there are no museums to go to, no churches to see, just wine to drink and pasta to eat!

This is a purely personal preference but I'd much prefer to visit less places but spend enough time in each that I do visit to really enjoy them and not feel yanked away before I'm ready...
But I do appreciate that it's a personal preference!

If one stays more than a few days in Venice one has time to get away from the hordes of daytrippers in Venice and will have time to walk and discover the quiet "nontouristy" areas of Venice. Anyway, I agree with Kavey but each traveller has to figure out what is ideal for their trip.

We spent 3 nights and 2 1/2 days in Venice last year, we thought Venice was great. I could have spent 1 more day but we did get to see just about everything in the time we had. Getting the 3 day pass for the vaparetto was great, you can hop on and off everywhere.
We spent 4 nights outside of CT. We did all the villages and went to Portofino 1 day. If you get a chance don't miss that part of Italy, I can't even tell you how beautiful and relaxing it is.
