Visiting the hill country on trip from Naples to Florence
We are working with a travel agent who currently have us taking the train from Naples to Florence spending 4 nights in Florence and then renting a car & spending 5 nights touring the hill towns in Tuscany & Umbria. In looking at a map it appears more expedient to rent a car in Naples driving & spending the same 5 nts. At 1 or 2 bases touring Tuscany & Umbria and then drive to Florence turning in the car and touring Florence. Want your opinions.

It would make more sense to rent the car in Naples and drive north if there are things you want to see between Naples and Rome. Which airport are you using to return home? If Rome, it makes as much sense to train to Florence and work your way back to the Rome airport (I am assuming that Rome itself is not in the picture).

Thanks for your reply. Sorry I didn't give you the full picture. We are arriving in Rome touring Rome and visiting the Amalfi coast and then to Naples for the train to Forence or option #2 to rent a car and visit the hill country on the way to Florence. After these 2 we will fly out from Milan.

Two possibilities:
1. Go from Napes to Orvieto by train and start the tour of Tuscany from there before going to Florence. Take the train from Florence to Milan.
2. Go to Florence. Start the car tour from Florence and work out an itinerary that takes you to Milan by car.

So drive to Venice and drop off the car there. From Tuscany you could go via Gubbio, Urbino and Ravenna.

Where are you going in Tuscany? I would not want to start in Orvieto if a travel agent had booked me into a hotel in the Chianti or San Gimignano for my first night.
