Has anyone got any insight on visting the Catacombs? Which is the best one to visit? Are they all near each other? What's the best way to get there?

The larger catacombs are close together on the Via Appia Antica. San Callisto is the biggest but I like San Sebastiano for the pilgrimage church above the catacombs and the fine examples of Roman burial vaults in the catacombs themselves. There is also a very interesting graffiti wall there. There is a public bus that you can take from San Giovanni Laterano but one of the easiest ways is to use the Archeobus which you can pick up in Piazza Venezia and hop on and off at various sites around Rome, including the catacombs. Other catacombs are located northeast of the center of Rome. The church of San Agnese Fuori la Mura has some interesting catacombs beneath it too.
Lorrie: Do a "Text Search" on Archeobus for more info and some websites. Regards, Walter
