Visiting Pompeii Via Train From Naples To Sorrento

Visiting Pompeii Via Train From Naples To Sorrento
We are planning to take the train from Orvieto to Naples and then continue on to Sorrento for a 4 night stay in mid-September. Would it be a good idea to make a stop to visit Pompeii on they way, rather than plan a later day trip from Sorrento? If so, would we need to purchase a separate ticket for the Pompeii stop, or can the same ticket to Sorrento be used with the stop over? I read in the forum that there is a luggage check facility available at the entrance to Pompeii. (?) Any advice would be greatly appreciated - thanks.

The devil is in the details as to whether it is a good idea for you and whomever "we" is when it comes to seeing Pompei en route or planning a separate day trip from Sorrento.
Obviously this is something many people do logistically. Some people are sorry they did it this way. For other people it was the right idea.
Probably the people who liked it had nice weather the day they went. They might also be people who like rolling out of bed at dawn, even when they are on vacation. Or they might be people who didn't have a big interest in Pompei or that kind of history, but would have felt bad about missing it while in the area, so hitting it on the fly, between 2 other stops, was "enough" for them.
Might be the people who were sorry they did it "en route" had lousy weather by the time they got there, were shocked at how big the place was and had no idea it couldn't be seen adequately in 2 hours, realized later that places like Sorrento and other towns in that area were actually a less rewarding use of their time in Italy than exploring places like Pompei.
Nothing wrong with doing it either way. You should take the trip to Italy that matches the enthusiasm of your group.
There is a luggage check at the entrance to Pompei. Sorry I can't help you with optimal train logistics from Orvieto or Sorrento.

From Orvieto to Naples takes from 3 to 4 hours by train, depending on how good your connections are in Rome. Then you have to take the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii, which takes about half an hour, plus the time to get to the Circumvesuviana tracks and wait for the next train. All in all, about 4 to 5 hours.
Then getting from Pompeii to Sorrento takes half an hour by the Circumvesuviana, so lets say an hour all told. Altogether, five to six hours of travel that day. If you think you would enjoy two hours at Pompeii on a day with such intense travel, then do it. You can change your mind on the day if you're too tired when you get to Naples.

Two years ago we trained from Rome to Naples, bought 3 day tutta la regione Artecards (don't trust my spelling) at the Naples station tourism office (the "i" place), and took the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento. We did a day trip by the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii (morning until late lunch) then to Herculaneum for a few hours in the afternoon. Another day we went to Naples and the Archeological Museum plus a neopolitan pizza where it was invented.
The artecard covered three days of travel, two free site entrance fees (Pompeii and Herculaneum) then half price from then on (the Museum). It also covers a lot of things we didn't do. It doesn't cover the ferry to Capri. It does cover the buses along the coast. I hope it still exists.

It used to be tickets were only good for a certain amount of time (75 minutes or so) once activated and you could buy a day ticket (also 3 day or 7 day). I don't see the day ticket listed anymore and the Circumvesuviana website no longer shows prices. You use your ticket to enter the train area (it's scanned at the turnstyle). I doubt it would still be good to access the train at Pompeii after you've been there several hours.
They still sell the Campania Artecard. The 3 day Tutta La Regione includes transport (the 7 day doesn't).

We did something similar to AJPeabody...took the Circumvesunviana from Meta(near Sorrento) to Pompeii. However, we ended up spending 4-5 hours at Pompeii itself, and never made it to Herculaneum. Traveling with 2 kids meant we moved a bit slower 
Although it seems logical to stop and visit Pompeii on the way, I'm usually pretty stressed when we move from point A to point B on a vacation. I just want to get to our destination, check in and chill.
Also depends on your level of interest in Pompeii itself. If it's a 'been there, done that' stop, then an hour or 2 will do. If you want to explore, then you'll need more time.
