Visiting Alsace/Lorraine - how many days?

We will check out of an apartment in Paris on Oct 9 and have to fly out of Paris on the 13th. Does this leave us enough time, (the nights of Oct 9-12) to plan a reasonable visit to Alsace? I think we can get a high speed train in/out of Paris but I'm still wondering if we are trying to pack to much into too little time. Any advice on how to focus our time there or other places we should consider?

I think that would make a lovely trip to the region. We just spent a week in Riquewihr and loved it - it takes two hours on the train to get to Strasbourg from Paris. Easy!

You can read our trip report here

Happy to answer any questions!

Just read through your trip report...LOVED IT. We enjoy eating and drinking our way through the regions of France, though I think you two set a pretty high bar for us to strive for.

For our limited schedule, would you recommend we stay in Strasbourg? Riquewihr? Colmar? We'll rent a car but would prefer not changing lodging for the 3 nights.

Any/all advice is greatly appreciated.

I would recommend to stay in one of those charming wine villages. The wine villages are in the foothills of the Vosges, while the villages in the plains are bland.

You will visit both Strasbourg and Colmar, so a village between both cities will be strategically good, e.g. Ottrott (which has, by the way, several excellent hotels). But also Kaysersberg, Turckheim and especially Eguisheim are picturesque villages with good access to roads. From these places, also the Ecomusee d'Alsace is in easy reach.

Riquewihr is VERY touristy. It is a must for sightseeing, but I would not stay there.

What I loved about staying in Riquewihr was that it was easy to drive in and out of and we weren't there when the tourist hordes were there during the day. But we returned every night after the tourist buses left and had lots of wine bars and great restaurants to choose from. Loved it! Some of the other villages are gorgeous but I thought they would be too quiet in the evenings for us.

Strasbourg is great but may be difficult to drive in and out if and stay with a car. Depends whether you want the city experience or the countryside experience.

Thanks for the replies....thought I'd see if anyone could provide any feedback, positive or negative, on the following:

In Riquewihr: La Sarment d’Or or Hotel La Couronne

In Ribeauville Hotel de la Tour

In Colmar HOTEL Le Rapp

In Strasbourg Hotel Gutenberg

Any opinions are appreciated -- or please suggest any we've overlooked. Thank you.
