visitin Capri and Pompeii in Ten Hours
HELP -- I have ten hours to visit Capri and Pompeii (cruise ship). I was thinking we would take the hydorofoil from Naples to Capri in the morning. Take the hyrdofoil back to Sorrento. Take the train from Sorrento to Pompeii. Take the train from Pompeii to Naples and then take a taxi to the port.
Is there a better solution. How frequently does the train run from Sorrento to Pompeii? Would it be quicker to take the hydrofoil back to Naples and then take the train to Pompeii.
Thanks!

Hi voconnell, I will be a bit more gentle then our Ira but I will tell you this. If you attempt this itineray you will be MAD by the end of the day! Either your entire ten hours will be a nightmare or because you might even miss boarding your cruise ship again.
Capri is better visiting when you have at least one overnight stay (the minimum I would do).
Pompeii and the Archaeological Museum is what I would do.
Best wishes with your decision.

It really is too much - you would have VERY little time for either site and both deserve several hours or more - to take in Capri I would suggest at least 24 hours. All your time would be taken up by the transiting and you could easily get to a place where you could not get back in time. Make a choice! and resolve to do the other NEXT TIME! Either one I'm sure you will have a pleasant day.

I agree that trying to do both is just too much. You can decide by what your interests are. If you really love scenery (beautiful islands, etc.) then go to Capri. If you like history, there is almost nothing to compare to Pompeii (and the museum in Naples, if possible -- I would probably add a trip up Mt. Vesuvius to Pompeii, those two might be doable, altho still hurried).

There is really no way to pull off this itinerary and actually see anything. If you want to drive up to Pompeii - look at the gate and trun around you may pull it off - otherwise - do one or the other.
Either that or you can land on Capri, stare at the harbor and then turn aournd and go back. There's no way you would have time to take the funicular up to the town (lines are often long) or get out to the blue grotto.
(Remember - this is Italy - there is the schedule - and then there is real time - not at all the same - esp for the boats and the hydrofoils.)

As lovely as Capri is, I think given your constraints I would stick to Pompeii. Here's why: you can't count on timing getting on and off Capri. To get up to the town of Capri, you have to take a funicular and sometimes the crowds mean a delay in getting up and back down to the harbor. And if the weather is at all iffy (not often this time of year), sometimes the boats are stuck in port.
Also, you can't imagine how big Pompeii is. Things are quite spread out, so the idea of just popping over there, taking a quick peek at it, and popping back to Sorrento really doesn't make sense. Also, you do have to be aware of train schedules -- they are frequent, but if you miss one, you may have to wait a half-hour or more.
I know this is taking the most pessimistic perspective on your plan, but you probably know the consequences of not making it back to your ship on time, so it's probably not worth taking a risk just to get a fly-by of these places, which deserve more time.
The itinerary IS doable but ONLY if you will be happy with a very brief glimpse of each place AND if everything falls into perfect place logistically.
FYI The train between Naples and Sorrento (via Pompeii) is the Circumvesuviana, website - http://www.vesuviana.it -- cleck on the "Pompeii" station to get "orari" -- hours/schedule.
