sure, stay in the NH Calderon on rambla de Catalunya (this is NOT the "ramblas"), it's a very nice modern hotel, excellent location on a street with tons of outdoor eating places in the center, it's a quick walk to metro stops and placa Catalunya, etc. And very reasonably priced for a 4* hotel.
Otherwise, I like the Hotel Jazz which is near placa Catalunya.

I use to stay on the edge of the medieval and vibrant Born/La Ribera district. Excellent part of town in itself and close to "everything".
I can warmly recommend Park Hotel, nothing spectacular but a great value nice place in an excellent location.

Some of the best tapas bars in town are on your doorstep, and El Born is also a cradle of Catalan identity and culture. http://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.c...s/el-born.html
