Visa rules - 4 months in Portugal
My daughter will be doing academic research in Portugal for 4 months beginning in October, 2013. She is a US citizen. Is a Visa required for this length of time? Thank you

Portugal is part of the Schengen zone. On entering Portugal,as a US citizen, she automatically receives a vistor's visa for, as previous state, 90 days out of the next 180 days. It is a day count and not 3 months of six months. The penalties for staying over can be severe. If she needs to stay longer she needs to immediately contact a Portuguese consulate. Getting an extended stay visa can be time consuming.
