Any recommendations on vineyards/wine tastings in Tuscany? Ideally not only with great wines but interesting sites, history, etc. We're staying in San Gimignano.

Castello Verrazzano (Greve in Chianti) looks worthwhile but I'm guessing there are others that are closer.

Antinori is the top winery in Chianti and has world renowned, museum-worthy architecture.

Vernaccia is probably the wine most associated with SG. There is a museum devoted to it in the town.

I did two winery tours in March. Antinori and Castello di Ama.
Castello di Ama was amazing; not only is it old and charming, they have got interesting modern art installations throughout the property which you are taken around to during the tour.

The wine was delicious and they also have a very good on site restaurant. I had lunch there and it was fantastic.

I did Antinori next and while it is indeed an amazing modern structure that they have spent a ton of money on, it is not as charming as Castello di Ama.
Still worth seeing but different. Antinori is one of the biggest if not the biggest, wine makers in Italy so much bigger production, range of wines etc.

We went to Castello Verrazzano in 2008, it was also very good but Castello di Ama is probably closer to you.

Hubby and I visited Castello di Brolio - Brolio Castle (castle + wine tour) and Altesino (http://www.altesino.it/eng/azienda.php).

If you enjoy history Brolio is definitely worth a visit with the added bonus of a wine tour.

We enjoyed both but especially loved Altesino. We took the private tour and found it very interesting and our guide was fantastic. After the tour we sat in a private room overlooking the vines tasting the wines and dining on cheeses and breads. The wine is also very good.
