Villefranche or Cap ferrat for base

Staying 4 days in September. I booked at le Panoramic in Cap Ferrat but they dont have any Double beds available at the moment. To my surprise Hotel Welcome in Villefranche is not booked for the same dates. Should I switch?

Hi Barry
It all depends on what you are looking for and what you want to spend. I have never been to Cap ferrat but have been to Villefranche. Hotel Welcome is right in the Harbour. Some rooms I think have views others do not. We stayed at Hotel La Flore which is on a main street higher up so you have a view of the harbour (from the terrace of our room). The bus ride to Nice, which stopped next door, was less than 5 minutes and about $1 or $2 a person. Most have web sites so do some comparisons on the web and it may help you decide.

I guess it depends on how much you want a double bed. I don't know anything about these hotels but Villefranche isn't all that far from Cap Ferrat so you'd still be based in the same general location. And Villefranche, IMO, is a wonderfully picturesque pastel-colored town.

Hi Barry,

I go to Nice almost every summer, and know both of these towns. Quite honestly, I don't think I'd base myself in either of them. They are very small, and picturesque, but QUIET. You could tour each town by bus or taxi from Nice, and spend about a half day to a day max in either one. I personally prefer Nice as a base, because it has such great bus and train service to Cannes,Antibes, Monaco, and the hill towns like St. Paul de Vence. We're never bored there. About four years ago, we made the mistake of staying in the town next to Cap de Ferrat, Beaulieu, and although we're in our forties, we were the youngest people there. We visited Cap de Ferrat, had drinks at the infamous hotel there, and found it quite stuffy. They do have a great selection of little restaurants and galleries down at the water, but really, as I said earlier, unless you want to take quiet walks and hang out on the pier, there's not much going on.
Regarding Hotel Welcome, it's pretty, but some of the rooms are tight and airless. The town itself is quite small. I think the tour guides can be deceiving. Hope you don't mind my honesty here- I don't mean to ruin your trip, if this is really what you want to do! Good luck!

Hey Wendy, the original plan was to stay in Nice but its prety booked for the first 2 weeks of September. Besides, we need some quiet after touring Paris/London.

Barry, We stayed in Cap Ferrat and did not regret it for a moment. Just as Cap and Ville. are a stort ride from Nice, Nice is a short ride from both of these towns. We stayed at Clair Logis. It is lovely, but you must book in one of the old buildings IMHO. I cannot remember the Panoramic, much to my frustration because so many posters have commented favorably regarding that hotel. Hotel Welcome is well situated on the harbor in Ville., but I would insist upon "a room with a view". We did not regret our choice over the Welcome for a minute.

Wherever you stay, I bet you will have a great time. In Cap, the restaurant Captain's Cook(s), just off the harbor going towards Paloma Beach, was great. The restaurant at Paloma Beach was lively and romantic at night. It stayed open late, but I don't recall when the latest reservation was accepted. Rent a spot at paloma Beach during the day, it was worth every penny.

linda
