Villages to Visit in Piedmont on the way from Milan

We'll be in the Piedmont with friends this October. We'll be driving from Milan, don't know at what time of day yet, due to some meetings some of us might have.

We're staying in Monforte d'Alba, and I have lots of info on village and vineyards to visit in that area. And we'll be in Alba on Saturday for the truffle festival.

But let's say we leave Milan with time to be somewhere in the Piemonte for lunch - which scenic large or small towns would you suggest for lunch and just for wandering around in, ending up in Monforte in the late afternoon? Or routes to take from Milan to Monforte, other than the obvious? I'm thinking we'd have a casual meal. Towns I've come up with so far are: Asti, Nizza Monferatto, Cocconato, Gavi, Costigliole d’Asti.

Thanks in advance!

A town with local atmosphere that we enjoyed was Casale Monferrato. We were there on a Sunday evening and everybody was outside walking, visiting, and enjoying. There is a restored synagogue there, but I'm not sure when it is open. Loved the outdoor food market in Alba.

Hmmm ! I will know more in 2 weeks when we will be in that area, but from what I have read you may want to hit Asti and then drive south via Alba. Either would be a good place for lunch.

In Alba, Ristorante Enoclub had a good lunch and was an attractive restaurant. Our salad and pasta were good.

Thanks - we'll be in Alba on another day, and I already have Enoclub on my list of restaurants.

Bobthenavigator - I'll be waiting for your report on your short trip to the Piemonte!
