villa or hotel in Northern Italy

We are going to be in Northern Italy in May next year and we think we would like to rent a villa to be homw base then sightsee from there. Is that good and where would be a good home base? Would a hotel be better and then move to the different cities after a couple days?

Phylis--go to the website: villasandvoyages.com--they have wonderful villas in Italy and France and you can see the actual homes on the internet--once you find one, email DAvid Geen at the 800 no.provided and he will give you availability and ask questions such as how many people and what type of accomodations you like--=Can tell you one thing though---MOST ALL OF the accomnmodations have NO Air Conditoning--try to find one with a POOL...

Depends on how far into Northern Italy you want to wander. We rented a 15th Centuru Villa near Lucca in 2000. We went to Florence (45 minutes), Garafagna (30 minutes), Siena and San Gimignano (about an hour and a half) on an every other day schedule. On the non-travel days, we enjoyed the Villa and the local surroundings, markets, Lucca, restaurants, etc. The walls of the Villa were so thick it remained cool, even in July. We used tuscanynow.com. They were great and the Villa was stupendous. They also have pictures and descriptions and pricing online. They also have a great catalogue you can order online. Great way to go, but make your reservation as early as you can. By December, they are booked for the following year.

We toured N Italy last year all by train. Flying into Milan, had 3 nights there with a side trip to Bergamo; then on to Brescia,Cremona, Mantua, Ferrara, Ravenna and Urbino Stayed in hotels all the way. The alternative to rent a villa means you can savour more of the local life of course but it cuts down what you can get to visit

Where in north Italy? I consider Tuscany to be central Italy. The north is Veneto, Trentino, the Dolomites, the Lakes, Liguria et al. Is that what you mean? If so, you would need 3 locations to see these areas well. It will be hard to do it from one villa.
