I haven't stayed at either. However last Summer we spent three days in Florence and stayed in the Hotel Ballestri. It was what I would called an undiscovered treasure. It wasn't in any of the tourist books and we only found it through an Italian friend. It is right on the river and so conviently located to everything! I can't recommend it enough. Contact them at [email protected]

My husband and I spent one night there in 1998. I didn't like it at all. It wasn't worth the price. The room had cheap furniture and everything was a little dirty and worn looking. We had spent three nights in Florence earler in the vacation at Hotel Splendor and liked it very much. Although our room was small it was great and the people were wonderful.

I second the Balestri. The staff was ever so helpful and polite, and it was the best breakfast we had in Italy. Mario (in the breakfast room) makes a wonderful capuccino if you ask. It is also very convenient to everything - on the river just a few blocks from Ponte Vecchio. Glad to see others mentioning this great place.

I stayed at the Loggiato last year and loved it. This year we are staying at the Hotel Splendor, for price reasons. In fact, we leave tomorrow. I think you will love the Loggiato.

Denise

Hotels in the Boboli area are very nice in my opinion. Nice position, because you reach them by car from the motorway and have parking area. Also the place is quite and very romantic. From there you can go to the city-centre in 10/15 minutes walking through this beautifil garden (one of the bigger privete garden in the world).
A part Villa Carlotta, there are hotels like Classic Hotel, Hotel Villa Cora, Suisse Hotel, Hotel Villa Betania, Pensione Annalena are all nice Hotels that I suggest out of the centre.
