villa by the beach in Portugal
Our summer 2011 family reunion will held in Portugal. We are in the early stages of planning this first time ever trip to that country.
With so many internet sites to help, finding a villa to rent will not be a problem, but we need information on location. We need to be not too far from Lisbon and near a nice beach. What areas do you recommend we look in?

Our best beach holiday (two times) was in the Algarve--about 4 hours drive from Lisbon, I should think. We rented an apartment with two bedrooms, balcony, full ammenities and self catering for a very reasonable rate, in Albuferia..How m any folks are you talking about, and what is the distance requirement from Lisbon--how close in must you be?..If you drive north, there is Cascais which is lovely and very scenic..we are going there next--October, and I think it will be pretty cool then...
My advice is to book early, as summer is a busy place with lots of European tourists.

Last year we stayed in Salir do Porto about 2 hours from Lisbon.
We rented a two floor, three bedroom apartment 100m from the Salir beach. It had balconies that faced the sea. The beach itself was very nice,
This is a very quiet town, not crowded with mostly locals. it was very relaxing and we enjoyed it very much.
It is on the other side of the horse shoe beach which fronts San Martinho do Porto.
You do not say how many people.

I think there are lots of nice places to rent near the Praia das Macas, which is about 20 (?) minutes from Sintra out to the ocean. And if you stay near there, you will not be far from my absolute favorite fish restaurant on the ocean -- the Restaurante d'Adraga on the tiny, beautiful Praia d'Adraga.
