Villa Borghese area in Rome

We are considering renting an apartment in Rome that is near the Via Veneto and Villa Borghese in Rome. I have never been to Rome before and would like to know if this is too far from the Historic Center, if it is a convenient area, will there be food markets, is the Villa Borghese nice/safe/walkable? From my guidebooks it looks pretty good, but it is also at the very top of the map, so I wanted to make sure it is not too far away from sights. We are also traveling with our 2-year old child so on one hand the park and zoo would be nice, on the other hand I would like for sights to be in walking distance. Are taxis ubiquitous/efficient in Rome?

It's a lovely quiet zone in a hectic city! we love it there. If you are near VB , you are steps from Via Veneto, you can walk down thru the Metro entrance at the top of VV and be at spanish steps in less than 10 minutes...and there is a really good supermarket in the interior mall area. If the rate is good I'd grab it!

Lovely park for a little one to play in

The Borghese area of Rome is my favourite. It is so peaceful and you get away from the loud traffic of the city (the Vespas can drive you crazy). My family usually stays at the Hassler at the top of the Spanish Steps, being the only place in Rome to stay at. Please visit the cafes near Popolo and Trinita dei Monti. You will see the Visconti here with their little terriers and pugs.
