Vienna to Venice or visa versa

I am trying to put together a late spring trip (about 10 to 14 days) including these 2 cities...I would appreciate any ideas for an itinerary.
Thanks in advance for your help

I suppose you will be using trains? If so, here is what I would suggest:
I would stay in Vienna about 3 days. Then I would take a train to Salzburg and stay there other 2-3 days, take the train again, go to Innsbruck, stay a couple of days, then train again to Verona (there is a direct train Innsbruck-Verona), spend a night there, then take a train and go to padova, spend another night there, train to Venice, spend 3 days there. In this way you will see other places in between Vienna and Venice and the train connection is really easy and pleasant IMO.

Batuffolina must like packing an unpacking and schlepping from hotel to train and back again a lot more than I do.

While his itinerary is doable, I certainly wouldn't consider a single night in Verona, a single night in Padua, and then go on to Venice. Padua is less than a hour from Venice by train. I'd prefer staying in Venice and doing a day trip if you have that much time, rather than all that luggage hauling.

I'd also probably drop Innsbruck, but that's just a personal choice.

I'm more for staying in one place and doing day trips from there. For example an extra day in Vienna would allow you to do a great day to Melk and a Danube Cruise. I'd prefer that over another stop along the way.

Hi H,

Perhaps you could tell us what other cities you wish to visit?

And perhaps you could state whether these two cities are the beginning and end of an itinerary, or is there another trip before or after? Would help us advise re these one-night stands.

For the trip you described, I would drop both Innsbruck and Padua, or Innsbruck and Verona, and stay a couple of nights more in another city.

You could take the evening overnight out of Venice to Vienna in a sleeper car. Helps if you're in a romantic situation and can enjoy sipping wine in your cabin as you pull out of Venice. It's a money-saving way of combining lodging and transport and a little adventure.

Another idea: SkyEurope has inexpensive flights from Venice to "Vienna" (Bratislava, one hour east). An afternoon in the old section of Bratislava is a popular daytrip for Viennese shoppers. You might even stay overnight for some affordable opera, or other neo-Viennese cultural events.

We did exactly this spring 2004.
Venice - 4; Verona/lakes - 3; Innsbruck - 1; Salzburg - 2; Melk - 1; Vienna - 4. Total: 15 nights. If you only have 10 nights, I suppose you could delete Verona/lakes and Innsbruck and take the direct train Venice - Salzburg.
