Vienna to Salzburg Please Help

Hello:

We will be staying 3 or 4 days in Prague and then taking train to Vienna. From Vienna, we were wanting to take a day trip to Salzburg or 2 days/1 night. Since we will be taking a train, I have some logistic questions. First, can you recommend a good hotel to stay at. I would love to stay at the Schloss Fuschl, as the grounds seem to be amazing, but it seems a bit off the beaten path having no car.

Can anyone please give me some guidelines. My daughter really wants to see the Sound of Music tour as she is a music and theatre gal. I really want to see Old Town and maybe a salt or ice cave or whatever we can see in the short time we are there.

Any tips or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Thanks again.

One night is NOT 2 days it is 2 half days. Not sure when the Sound of music tour happens but assume it is in the am so you would have to do that on day 2.

That leaves only the half of day 1 so do take as early a train from Vienna as possible to see the Old Town, The fortress overlooking the town, Mozart's birthplace etc. (You can get a train at about 6:30 am that will get you to Salzburg by about 9 am.) Check carefully for opening hours so you can get into the sights while there is still time to see anything.

Sorry - but you won;t have time to see a lot more of the countryside, salt mines etc unless you can get some sort of joint tour on day 2 - and then perhaps have to spend a second night in Salzburg.

I agree that Schloss Fuschl would be in an odd location for just one night on such a short trip w/o car.

Also the salt mines and caves S and W of Salzburg would be a bit too far IMO.
If you wanted an item, you could think about Helbrunn palace & gardens:

It should be part of most SOM tours anyway.

Regarding the SOM tours:
Check out the official Salzburg TI website for links to the different tours available.. there is not just one:

tms777, you really are trying to jam too much into your one-night Salzburg outing. The train from Vienna is about 3 hours, then you need to give yourself time to drop your luggage and navigate into the city. By this time you're already behind schedule for most of the good SOM tours that depart in the morning.

Having taken visiting friends and family to Salzburg on day-trips, even though we leave Vienna at 06:00 and I know where to park and how to navigate the city, the day is an exhausting whirlwind that never includes all of the SOM sites and leaves everyone exhausted by the time we depart for Vienna in the early evening.

I wholeheartedly suggest either spending two nights in Salzburg or dropping a couple of activities from your initial itinerary.
