Vienna - stay near train station or Innere Stadt?

We will be arriving at Vienna by train from Prague in May 2014. It is not clear which station we would be arriving at since there is a lot of info about the station renovations in Vienna. If I didn't have a budget I would not care where we stayed, but I like to stay around $200 or less a night and spend my money on activities. During our 2 day stay, I want to see the old town area, enjoy coffee and pastry at a café while just enjoying the atmosphere, take in a concert/waltz and if time allows, visit a wine garden.

Hard to look at a map to determine how easy it is to get around so I am looking for suggestions based on your experience. I have spent a ton of time trying to figure this one out through the internet and feel more confused than anything. Should we look at hotels near train station or Innere Stadt? love small locally owned B&B and hotels, but not opposed to larger hotel as we have plenty of planned stays at small hotels during our entire trip.

Gratefull for any help!

Trains from Prague can arrive at one of five stations in Vienna - the fastest train, with no changes arrives at Meidling, which is not an area to stay in as it is not close to the Innere Stadt. Both the Hauptbahnhof and the Westbahnhof are closer to the Innere Stadt and present an opportunity to walk ( a long one) and have subway connections to take you there in 3-4 stops.

I think the Westbahnhof would be the best station to stay near, but that only makes sense if you are arriving at it. Ideally, staying just south west of the Innere Stadt, on a line towards the Westbahnhof is probably the ideal location for Vienna. You can walk to the Innere Stadt and also to Naschmarkt, the Museumqartier, Spittelberg, shopping on Mariahilferstrasse and the best parts of the Ring.

Alternately, there are some B&B type accommodations just south east of St. Stephen's Dom in the Innere Stadt.

A couple of years ago I stayed at the Hotel Royal, very near the cathedral and I thought an ideal location. I just had a look at current prices and it's about €150 a night in May for a standard double room. I had no trouble finding from the train station, directions are on the website. I'd certainly stay there again, right in the heart of the city:

I haven't stayed here in years but friends have and were happy with their room and breakfast.

The location is terrific, where I'd want to be if only in Vienna for a short time.

Thanks for the quick suggestions. It really helps me narrow the field. Checked some of these and not available in May when we will be there. So, tonight I will be checking out the rest. Glad I did not wait until the last minute.

I'm leaving in 3 weeks, and will be staying again at K&T Boardinghouse on Mariahilfer Strasse. The Neubaugasse Metro Station is across the street and it's 1 stop from the Ringstrasse. Westbanhof is also just a 10 minute walk. The price is 79 Euros, and they now have two very nice properties.
See: KTboardinghouse.at for pictures and details.
I found out about them 15 years ago, as Rick Steves used to stay there.

Thanks, Bamaman. I will check it out. It is frustrating using search engines for pricing as many give you the nonrefundable rate to pull you in. Then you get the whole picture and it is a lot more $$. Since we are in our 50-60's, we have learned that weird things can happen in life that require one to cancel plans at the last minute. I will resume my planning tomorrow. Are you staying at K&T or K&T2?

check out hotwire dot com. pick a hotel with good ratings and the location you want and most likely you will be just as happy and also save money. I have been very lucky using that website. Also check travelzoo dot com or dot co uk if all these recommendations are full.
